have just installed OS 11.3 onto a lenovo desktop / Thinkcentre that previously had vista installed on it.
With Opensuse I am having trouble getting much sound volume.
With Vista the volume was fine but with Opensuse I have PCM, Master running prety much on full. This gives me a respectable volume but I think there should really be more left in the tank from what I have it at.
Is there any way to increase the gain in Alsa?
The sound device shows in KDE as HDA Intel (AD198x) using xine bakend
Please do the standard checks, such as going to YaST > Hardware > Sound > Other > Volume and move up all your slider bars to the max allowed volume (you can reduce as required later from the mixer).
Then check your mixer settings to ensure Master and PCM volumes are appropriately high.
It is more helpful in such cases if you provide the output URL/web-site address provided from running the diagnostic script:
/usr/sbin/alsa-info.sh
… be certain to select the ‘SHARE/UPLOAD’ option. You should have internet access when you run that script.
just a thought as I had the same problem with 11.3 - if you click on the mixer button and check the channels to see if the font speaker setting is shown or not. on my system it was not and was set at mute. changing this to normal level fixed the problem
Gosh, those settings are relatively LOW and NO WHERE near maximum volume. Your very first post suggested you had moved them up as high as they could go.
Now I am confused. … What did I miss in this?
Please look at the mixer settings as indicated by the script: Simple mixer control ‘Master’,0
Capabilities: pvolume pvolume-joined pswitch pswitch-joined penum
Playback channels: Mono
Limits: Playback 0 - 63
Mono: Playback 56 89%] -10.50dB] [on]
Simple mixer control ‘PCM’,0
Capabilities: pvolume pswitch penum
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
Limits: Playback 0 - 31
Mono:
Front Left: Playback 22 71%] -1.50dB] [on]
Front Right: Playback 22 71%] -1.50dB] [on]
Simple mixer control ‘Front’,0
Capabilities: pvolume pswitch penum
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
Limits: Playback 0 - 63
Mono:
Front Left: Playback 13 21%] -72.00dB] [on]
Front Right: Playback 13 21%] -72.00dB] [on]
Note these controls are NOT LINEAR !
89%, 71% and 21% reads to me to be rather a low setting.
sorry - I didn’t have the volume up to max at the time I ran the script. Where the settings are when the script was run is about as low as I set them when wanting the volume on a low level and there is really only a little difference between that and having the sliders maxed out.
The “Front” slider has no effect on volume and makes no change whether maxed or on zero.
I am getting an OK volume from things now - like I said - it just feels like there should be more left over.
something interesting I have noticed there today is that the PCM and Master sliders do absolutely nothing between about 0% and 75% then suddenly start effecting the volume once the slider is pushed over 75%
in all my playing around I corrupted my install of Opensuse and decided to run a clean install.
Once this was completed I have good volume levels so guess there was something wrong in my original install.
Yes I am experiencing the the same problem, here is the output of the script (please note that at the time of the testing that the volume on Master, PCM, and Speaker were all to the max)

I am sorry to read you are having a problem, but in truth, I do not know what it is. Is it a low sound problem ? Is it a distorted sound problem? Is it another sound problem? What tests are you using to determine this sound problem exists?
You say you have the same problem as user farcusnz ??? You did not provide a name, so I am guessing. Note user farcusnz’s PC has an AD1981 while yours has an ALC259. That is different hardware, so its rather unlikely the problem is the same, even if symptoms are shared.
You may be better served to start a new thread with your problem, as opposed to tagging on to someone else’s, where they have different hardware (and hence the code in the sound driver for your hardware is likely different).
I’m afraid I won’t be able to follow up this thread, as I am on vacation for the next couple of weeks more (in a different continent) with random to no internet access.
If you believe you have tried all possibilities, then it may be quicker for you (to obtain a solution) by writing a bug report on openSUSE-11.3 component “sound”. There is guidance here for raising bug reports: openSUSE:Submitting bug reports - openSUSE … you can use your forum user name and password when logging on to bugzilla.
