I’ve been using openSUSE 11.4 a couple of weeks and loved it. I installed it on my pc with 10GB of free space, and the performance was so good that I was astounded.
I got a 500GB hard disk and installed openSUSE there, but my computer is slow now, I don’t think it’s a HD issue because it’s new. When I get to the System Monitor I see 2 compiz daemons, usually one sleeping with around 5% of CPU usage, and the other running with 50~60% or even more of CPU usage, so I think it’s a compiz problem. Even watching a mp4 video gets the pc slow. There’s only one compiz-manager daemon, and when I’m not using it there’s 0% of CPU usage, so I think that’s ok.
I’ve read that it could be because of the swap partition, I sized it 2.7GB, and I’ve tried swapoff -a, but it’s the same performance.
Some pc details:
CPU: 1.8GHz AMD Sempron™ Processor 3400+
RAM: 1.8GB (It’s 2GB but that’s what the System Monitor shows)
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 6150LE
Disk partitions:
/ ext4 42.3GB
/home ext4 374GB
swap 2.7GB
Any help is appreciated because it’s the same computer, and OS, but it’s a lot slower and I don’t think the 2 compiz daemons are normal. Thanks and sorry for the bad english
I do have nvidia drivers installed, and I guess I could turn effects off, but the problem is that they worked fine in the same computer and it was a lot faster. I want to know if there’s a way to solve this because I don’t want to expend another 6 hours reinstalling suse, and I’m almost sure that is the 2 compiz processes thing. Thanks for the reply.
I turned everything off by entering the simple compiz manager and unchecking the Activate effects box, then entered the “full” compiz manager and unchecked everything and then I restarted my pc.
Surprise, there’s only one compiz process running, so I tried turning on the effects again and it appears to be solved as the compiz daemon only consumes around 8% CPU. I guess the compiz thing is solved, but there are still some problems with other applications, for example, the banshee player it’s slow when I’m browsing the album arts. I know my pc is slow u.u, but I didn’t have this problems with my previous openSUSE installation.
Anyway, I’d like to inprove the banshee problem and some other applications performance or know what’s causing this slowness I didn’t have before, thanks for all the help.
I have a much higher spec than you and I don’t use effects. I could. But it’s just not necessary.
I advise you do without.
You can still set transparency in the panel, which makes things a little easier on the eye.
