Low framerate, stuttering video. Sometimes screen only updates when mouse is moved

Howdy! I’m new to both GNU/Linux and OpenSUSE as a whole. You’re talking to a noob here.

Hardware:
Thinkpad P14s
CPU: AMD Ryzen™ 7 PRO 8840HS Processor (3.30 GHz up to 5.10 GHz)
GPU: Integrated AMD Radeon™ 780M
Desktop environment: KDE Plasma 6 on Wayland

It’s plenty fast. But…

My desktop experience feels very sluggish. Slow, almost variable framerate. Sometimes smooth, sometimes choppy. 1080P video playback in both VLC and Haruna is very choppy. Yes, I have installed the H.264 codec pack.

The most interesting thing is on the login screen:
When I enter my password sometimes the field shows nothing until I move the mouse. What could cause all this?

BUT WAIT, IT GETS WEIRDER!
When attempting to get a video of this I discovered when the mouse is in the upper left corner the screen updates normally. The same is true of video playback. When watching something in VLC the video is smoother when the mouse is in the top left corner.

Is it dual boot? Or just opensuse?, How old is this machine?
Stock ssd? if not what is being used for starage?

My first thought is a hardware issue. Have you tried unplugging and or disabling hardware. to see if the response times improves?
Easiest to do is unplug the mouse, also try disabling trackpoint, and touch pad, one by one and see if there is any improvement.

Just OpenSUSE on the stock Kioxia M.2 SSD. System is less than a week old.

Changing mouse configuration has no impact on performance.

A couple developments since my last post:

I installed Kubuntu and everything works fine.
I’ve googled what I could with what I know and I suspect it’s a compositor issue. I found similar issues in these threads:

Or maybe GUI is only refreshed after moving mouse cursor. **How Reproducible** Always. In XFCE you need to give it a bit more time until the problem appears (open some apps in VMs, used them for a while). In awesome wm or i3 wm just follow steps below. **To Reproduce** Steps to reproduce the behavior: 1. Open an application in a VM on tag/workspace 1. 2. Open a terminal (in VM or dom0) on tag/workspace 2. 3. Press `L` key and observe nothing happens. 4. Move mouse cursor slightly and observe that `l` appears in the terminal. 5. Press `S` key followed by `Enter` key and observe nothing happens. 6. Move mouse cursor slightly and observe that `s` appears in the terminal and `ls` command is executed. **Expected behavior** Keyboard events should be processed immediately and `l` and `s` letters should appear in the command prompt. **Actual behavior** Keyboard events (or displaying them) are buffered until mouse cursor is moved. Only once mouse cursor is moved, all pending keyboard events are processed. When you start observing issue, you will also notice that clock is only updated when mouse is moved.Wait 2 minutes - no time update,move mouse - it will bump by 2 minutes. **Additional context** The problem started happening after 2020-01-18 upgrade. The following packages were upgraded in dom0: ``` Installing: kernel x86_64 1000:5.4.88-1.qubes qubes-dom0-cached 56 M kernel-qubes-vm x86_64 1000:5.4.88-1.qubes qubes-dom0-cached 87 M Upgrading: qubes-core-dom0 x86_64 4.0.56-1.fc25 qubes-dom0-cached 749 k Removing: kernel x86_64 1000:4.19.132-1.pvops.qubes @qubes-dom0-cached 252 M kernel-qubes-vm x86_64 1000:4.19.147-1.pvops.qubes @qubes-dom0-cached 513 M ``` Qubes OS was restarted before the above upgrade and there was no issue. After the above upgrade, Qubes was restarted and the issue appeared. **Solutions you've tried** 1. Downgrading `qubes-core-dom0`. 2. I wanted to downgrade kernels, but that was impossible. dnf said that kernel and kernel-qubes-vm are at minimum version already.
