Low footprint _64 Server Distro Needed

I’m after a little advice on behalf of my Son who want to try a new server arrangement. He currently uses M$ lol!
But plans to use a Low footprint Linux Host to run VMWare Server.
I ain’t going to argue with him, but you are welcome to offer advice on that.

But my question is:

Which distro would you advise that fits the bill.

  • Low footprint (Not specified, but you get the idea)
  • Doesn’t need a UI (But I guess you could install most that way or just never load the UI?)
  • Long term support would be ideal

Thanks. I’m a server noob.

Debian. You can strip it down to next to nothing. I have run mail servers in as little as 128MB.

Ubuntu LTS and CentOS also can be considered and also are long term.

Yeah, I discussed this last night with him. Thanks

Seems like I was thinking on these lines too. Thanks

Got access to SUSE Studio, openSUSE JeOS (or try SLES11 JeOS?) and build
from that? If you used Larry Fingers kernel compiling method and strip
out all the stuff not needed, should scream along.

Hi
Was thinking though, if the host system is isolated (in-band
management), then unless there is a feature/vunerability for vmware
server this would be the only need for any updating of the hosts OS?

Malcolm, thanks. I see what you mean, but I’m not sure I fully comprehend. I have sent the link to this thread to my Son Jason so he can look at it.

I really appreciate your advices friends.

Custom build through Studio. That’s how I’d do it.

This is my Son we are talking about. He already install Ub* 8.04 LTS server. I was helping him a little yesterday over ssh. He’s running vmware inside it, Ub* is just the host.
This was just a trial mind. I’ll mention the idea to him as I have studio account.

I see - I must’ve misunderstood, thought you were looking for a
lightweight install for the host

Vmware ESXi, no need for a separate Linux distribution.

I’ve passed the info on. Tx H;)
