Lost Wi-Fi after update 15.2 to 15.3

Wireless is not my strong point…

Just did a zypper dup from Leap 15.2 to 15.3 on a laptop which has a Realtek RTL8821CE.

The dup went OK and all appears to be working as expected, apart from the Wi-Fi…

On 15.2 this was working fine with the “rtl8821ce-kmp-default” driver from @Sauerland’s repository “https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/Sauerland:/hardware/openSUSE_Leap_15.2_Update/

Following the zypper dup, (having changed the URL to “https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/Sauerland:/hardware/openSUSE_Leap_15.3_Update/”) the driver “rtl8821ce-kmp-default” is no longer working.

I can’t help but feel I’ve missed something very obvious, but am at a loss to see what :frowning:

The older Leap 15.2 kernel is probably still installed. Does WiFi work if you boot that?

Yes, indeed it was…

Does WiFi work if you boot that?

No, no change.

Also tried, although not expecting it to make any change, which it didn’t, deleting and re-installing the driver.

Hmm… actually, taking a second look with the intention of trying once more just to be sure (it’s turning into one of “those” days), I’m not so sure it was.

The current 15.3 kernel is 5.3.18-59.19 and the “older” 15.2 kernel is shown as 5.3.18-lp152.87

I deleted the firmware rpms for better reading, do you install the blacklist rpm???

PS
I also would delete the kernel-default from Leap 15.2

Problem is:
The rtl8821ce is supported since Kernel 5.9 with module rtw88, Leap 15.3 has a backported Kernel 5.9 to 5.3.
So you have to blacklist rtw88.

But:
The rtl8821ce from kernel 5.9 has a bug and is first working out of the box in kernel 5.11.

So all kernel up to 5.11 needs a separate module to work.

There are 2 modules in my Repo:
rtl8821ce (the old one and will be deleted after lifetime of Leap 15.2)
rtw88 a backported module from an actual kernel, which will be supported by me.

I have tried both with my Laptop and both are working.

The blacklist rpm was not installed, installing “rtl8821ce-blacklist-rtw_8821ce” does not change the situation,

PS
I also would delete the kernel-default from Leap 15.2

Neither does deleting the leap 15.2 kernel. still no wi-fi, and iwconfig, for example gives this output:

paul@HP255G7:~> su -
Password:
HP255G7:~ # sudo iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.

eth0 no wireless extensions.

OK, (being a little slow on the uptake here), so do I try “rtw88” instead of rtl8821ce?

What I don’t understand is that prior to the dup to 15.3 this was working ok, indeed I used the wi-fi connection for zypper up prior to the the dup, and for dup itself.

15.2 seemingly had the same 5.3.18 kernel, I assume there was no change to the rtl88ce (?), and, obviously, the hardware is the same.

Thanks.

Kernel 5.3 in openSUSE are not the same.

Leap 15.2 has backported kernel 5.6
Leap 15.3 has backported kernel 5.9

module ‘8821ce’ is unsupported

Do you disable secure boot in Bios/Uefi?

Yes, secure boot is disabled in bios. (Checked again just now and it is clearly shown as disabled.)

I do not know, what is going on, try to delete both rtl8821ce packages and install rtw88-kmp-default.

Also post:

No change with rtw88, still no wi-fi.

Thanks again.

What about rfkill:

rfkill list all

Using rtl8821ce-kmp-default as that was (prior to 15.3) working OK. rfkill shows no output just returns to the command line prompt.

I looked back at the journal for a boot prior to the zypper dup to 15.3 this is an extract showing the first few lines when 15.2 was in use:

I note there is a specific reference to the loading of the 8821ce module, that reference doesn’t appear in the journal output (of 15.3) as shown in post #11, so would I be correct in assuming the module, for some reason, isn’t even being loaded?

Appreciate your assistance so far, thanks.

Some progress

On the basis that I thought the (rtl8821ce) module wasn’t loading I wondered if “something else” had blacklisted it in some way.

In “/etc/modprobe.d/” there is a configuration file “10-unsupported-modules.conf”

#
# Every kernel module has a flag 'supported'. If this flag is not set loading
# this module will taint your kernel. You will not get much help with a kernel
# problem if your kernel is marked as tainted. In this case you firstly have
# to avoid loading of unsupported modules.
#
# Setting allow_unsupported_modules 1 enables loading of unsupported modules
# by modprobe, setting allow_unsupported_modules 0 disables it. This can
# be overriden using the --allow-unsupported-modules commandline switch.
#
# CAUTION: In SUSE Linux Enterprise products, loading unsupported modules
# is disabled by default. Re-enabling it is discouraged, as it may compromise
# enterprise product supportability.
#
# SLE users, please read the documentation about kernel module support in the
# SUSE Linux Enterprise Server Administration guide:
#
# https://www.suse.com/documentation/sles-15/book_sle_admin/data/sec_admsupport_kernel.html
#
# NOTE: Modules from SUSE partners delivered under the SUSE SolidDriver Program
# are marked as "externally supported". Such modules are not regarded as
# "unsupported" and thus unaffected by the "allow_unsupported_modules" flag.
#
# On openSUSE, the kernel doesn't have the feature to recognize supported modules,
# and this flag has no effect.
allow_unsupported_modules 0

Somewhat clutching at straws, and despite the last paragraph “On openSUSE, the kernel doesn’t have the feature to recognize supported modules, and this flag has no effect.”, I set “allow_unsupported_modules 1”, saved the file and rebooted.

Now I have wi-fi working.

Do you have kernel-default-extra and kernel-default-unsupported installed?

neither are currently installed and “kernel-default-unsupported” doesn’t appear to be in any of this systems currently active repositories.
