Lost screen settings

To set up the background image of the screen I click
on “Default Desktop Settings”, select one of the offered
pictures, click “Apply” and “OK”.
Everything is fine, the background is the selected picture.
If I log out and log in again the background is back to
the default. What have I missed?

Compaq Presario 32-bits 1.5 gigabytes
SuSE 13.2
KDE 4.10.5 release 1
Available updates applied

Correction: KDE is 4.14.3

Try a different user.

Was this a clean new install or an upgrade? Have you run any other OS using the same home? Are you the owner of all the files in the home?

Clean install on two Compaq Presarios. Identical procedures.
Only one of them has this problem.
No other OS, no dual boot, reformatted / and /home (ext4)
As far as I can see the user is the owner of everything.
I have noticed that ~/.kde4/share/config/kdeglobals are different
on the two machines. A lot of stuff seem to be missing on the
problem machine.

That is why I suggested to try another user. It sounded like a problem in the KDE configs.

Solved

The major difference between th two machines was the graphics card,
so on the problem-machine I installed the nvidia drivers - and the
problem went away.
