Lost screen resolution 1440x900

Hi there guys!

I’m using Tumbleweed for a few months already but a couple of weeks ago my screen resolution went down to 1024x768 when before it was 1440x900. These are my repos (pretty much standard with a couple specific for software I need such as mendeleydesktop and playonlinux):

Now, I cannot revert back to the previous screen resolution at: Configure desktop > Display and Monitor. Can anyone help? My graphics card is Intel.

Best regards

Maybe the intel driver is not loaded for some reason?

Please post /var/log/Xorg.0.log and check that you have xf86-video-intel installed:

rpm -qi xf86-video-intel

I don’t know a better way to show this so here goes the log:

Summary : Intel video driver for the Xorg X server
Description :
intel is an Xorg driver for Intel integrated video cards.

The driver supports depths 8, 15, 16 and 24. All visual types are
supported in depth 8. For the i810/i815 other depths support the
TrueColor and DirectColor visuals. For the i830M and later, only the
TrueColor visual is supported for depths greater than 8. The driver
supports hardware accelerated 3D via the Direct Rendering Infrastructure
(DRI), but only in depth 16 for the i810/i815 and depths 16 and 24 for
the 830M and later.
Distribution: openSUSE 12.3

OK, you have the driver installed and it seems to be used.
But your post of Xorg.0.log is missing the important parts. Please upload the whole file to susepaste.org and post a link.
Edit: sorry, missed your other post. I’m going to have a look on it now…

Ok, for some reason, the driver can’t correctly determine the monitor’s resolution via EDID.
This could be caused by several reasons:

  • you are using a monitor switch between the monitor and the gfxcard, which doesn’t route through the EDID signal
  • your cable is broken or loose
  • the monitor is too old to support EDID or is broken

You say it has been working before. And I guess you haven’t changed anything hardware wise.
So I would suggest to unplug your monitor completely (even the power plug) and then reconnect it.

It happened once to me, that my monitor wouldn’t report the resolution correctly anymore. (EDID checksum error)
Disconnecting the power plug cured that… Maybe it helps for you, too!

Great! It worked  Unplug and plug again!

Edit: Thank you

Glad to be of help!

Well, when I had that happening, I patched the kernel to ignore the checksum error and that worked for me.
I didn’t disconnect the monitor until 2 or three months later… I was very surprised (and annoyed  ) when it worked again correctly afterwards.
