Unfortunately last night when I opened my kwalletmanager to access my online back I found that one of the two wallets is missing!! I have two wallets one for the internet passwords and one for storing bank accounts!
It is really dissapointing that my bank wallet is not any more there. I found only the *.kwl file of the other wallet but not for the one that is missing. It is really weird how it dissapeared. I do not think that I accidentally removed it but I believe that I might have it left open before shutting down my computer (as I though that the wallet closes automatically)
Right now I am at the bad position of not having my bank accounts any more. Could you please suggest me some way of how I should try to restore the file back? (Worst thing is that this file is stored in a ntfs partition
You should never use NTFS partitions for real Linux data. The possibility to use NTFS (and VFAT) partitions on Linux is for interchange with MS partitions, not for native usage on Linux (e.g. because a lot of Linux things are missing on NTFS and the like, no security/ownership is implemented).
You should have made a regular backup of all your data, even if it resides on non Linux file systems.
Maybe people who know more about NTFS can help you (aren’t they to be found in MS Forums rather then here?). In any case DO NOT USE THAT PARTITION UNTIL YOU GOT GOOD ADVICE. Everey action with that partition could make recovery impossible (if it is not allready).
That is a good question. But in this case you obviously do not have simply your* /home/alaios/Documents* on NTFS, but your whole* /home/alaios* or maybe even your complete* /home*. And that does not help in keeping your intercourse with NTFS to a minimum.
My answer would be, keep your need to use NTFS to a minimum. Decide which is your main OS (or better get rid of one of the two) and use the NTFS mount of one or more partitions of your Windows installation only for copying those few files that need to be exchanged to and from. That sounds a bit restrictive and I will not stop you from e.g. using OOo on a MS Document on NTFS, but you should allways be aware of the limitations of NTFS when used inside Linux.
EDIT: though I am far from sure, the mysterious loss of your Kwallet files could be due to letting an MS OS loose on your Linux data.

i won’t let Windows NEAR my important stuff…i think it is best to
keep the important stuff on a secure single booting linux computer and
keep the games and letters to Aunt Tillie on the MS game box…
if you want to play music on your linux box that is kept on the MS box
then ssh in and stream it…
i mean, when you know the MS side will probably be cracked
eventually, WHY oh WHY let the MS side have access to any important
stuff?? especially not bank access passwords … wow !!
I would like to thank everzone for hir replies. I know this things and I do take the responsibilitz. For me this problem is not because of ntfs… something in the problem happened… and it is application s responsibility to inform me if something wrong have happened. Kwalletmanager is supposed to be an application for storing important data (like bank accounts) and even if there is something wrong with the file system (which I doubt was this case and should have been informed if there was such a problem).
If you still believe that there is still some hope to read some log file or there is something that I can do to find where this file is please let me know.

it will automatically close it if you set it to do that…
if yours is like mine (it may not be) if i right click on the wallet,
click configure i can set it to close when unused after some minutes,
and/or when the screen saver starts and/or when the last application
stops using it…but, i guess if none of those are checked then it
will stay open until you close it…
i have NO idea what happens to the .kwl file if it is left
open–though i highly doubt it would be lost if you shut down your
computer using the on screen method to achieve a full power off
shutdown–because that normally closes all open application, and i’d
GUESS all of those applications open files…but, i don’t know…
you should (imho) use normal MS actions to see if that file can be
found…what do they call it “undelete” i think (i’ve not used
windows much at all since 3.11…but, i believe DOS doesn’t really
delete files, it just changes their names and if you ask a real MS
guru to help you find the file it MAY be there…but DO not write to
that disk/partition before you find it…
and, to test if maybe you have found a reproducible bug i’d suggest
you should go ahead and make a new wallet, with a few not important
entries and repoduce the steps you took before (shutting down with it
maybe open) and see if the new wallet also disappears if you do a
normal, controlled shutdown…if so, i say you should log that
bugzilla…and, when you do reference this thread…
oh, and of course the best way to recover it is to just restore it
from your backup…
A shutdown includes logoff of the the users. A logoff of a user will lead to Kwallet to close down normaly. I have my Kwallet open all the time and it closes when my session closes (be it followed by a shutdown or not).
Thus when you do not realy have a power outage, do not see how a Kwalet file can get corrupted by a hutdown. In an case when it corrupted it is stil there and not deleted.
In any case, as DenverD and I suggested allready, look for a MS way to recover when you have no backup.
