Lost in download.opensuse.org

Hi,

I’m a bit lost among the various directories there. Well, I think I understand what distribution/, factory/ and update/ are. But what is repositories/ for? And, more specifically, why is repositories/Base:/System/openSUSE_Factory/ any different from factory/ ?

Feel free to point me to any relevant doc.

Thanks.

what are you trying to do? install programs? if so, you do not need to
wander around in download.opensuse.org, instead open YaST go to
“Software Repositories” and for normal, day-to-day operation have just
four repos enabled…the four talked about here:
http://forums.opensuse.org/new-user-how-faq-read-only/424611-new-users-opensuse-pre-install-general-please-read.html#post2058902

then, open Software Management and search for the software you wanna
install…

of course, if you have other needs you need to say so…

if you install anything from factory you are just asking for
bugs…so, be prepared to file a LOT of bug reports at
http://en.opensuse.org/Submitting_Bug_Reports

start here http://en.opensuse.org/Concepts and read it all, especially
the part about YaST (follow the links) and for more info see this old

Thanks for your answer.

As said, I’m trying to understand the directory structure (I forgot to mention I’m not a complete newbie, that’s why I want to get more in-depth understanding).

  • First, I’d like to understand what the colon stands for in the name of repositories/ subdirs. Several of them, but not all, have two variants, one with a colon and one without.
  • Second, I understand that many of them correspond to OBS projects. But then I’m puzzled by some whose names make them look like duplicates of main repos, e.g. repositories/Base:/System/openSUSE_11.2/ or repositories/Base:/System/openSUSE_Factory/. That’s why I’d like to learn what repositories/ is for, precisely.

of course, if you have other needs you need to say so…

My questions were indeed triggered by some specific search on software.opensuse.org/search, but they stand on their own.

i’ve seen that one answered before, but i can’t find it in the forums
right this second, i thought you could find it here:
http://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Aforums.opensuse.org+colon+repo+address

but, maybe you need to wicker the search string some…

oh, you do know don’t you that both addresses
http://software.opensuse.org/blahblah and
http://download.opensuse.org/blahblah

actually land at a server which ‘automatically’ redirects your browser
(or YaST, Zypper, whatever) to one of many many mirrors around the
earth…SOME of which might or might not use or show exactly the same
apparent path to any particular package/file/RPM/etc

read about that here: http://en.opensuse.org/Mirrors_Released_Version
and http://en.opensuse.org/Build_Service/Redirector

if you need more help on that i think i’d recommend you post it to
openSUSE Build Service (OBS) forum at
http://forums.opensuse.org/opensuse-build-service-obs/

or maybe join a mail list (most of the ‘real’ hackers are there) see
http://en.opensuse.org/Communicate/Mailinglists

by the way: no idea whatsoever on your second Q, but i guess if you
stumble across the real answer to the first, you will have found the
place/person who can also answer the second…

OK, thanks for the hints.

yes, i know i didn’t give an answer…but, i did not give hints to be
ornery (insteade i really do not know/remember the answer…

what i do know is that i’ve see a discussion on colon variable repo
addresses…

somewhere in these fora (i think…because i also follow usenet and
some mail lists)…

There was no contempt in my answer (just in case it was unclear). Any help is fully appreciated.:good:

(Mmh, couldn’t edit because more than 10 minutes have passed.)
I got it!
Naming conventions - openSUSE Forums
“Directories without colons are projects in OBS. In directories with colons are their subprojects”
