Lost GNOME graphics upon upgrade to 12.2

Hi SUSE Experts:

I have an old dog of a computer that was running 11.3. Today I did an upgrade from 11.3 to 12.2 using an install DVD. When it was all finished, after reboot, I have only a text screen with a blinking cursor. No graphic interface. The 11.3 was running a GNOME desktop. What do I do to get my desktop back? The network was properly configured during the update, but not the graphics. Thanks for any help that anyone can offer. ( I can get to a root command prompt from the text screen.)

11.3->12.2 is not supported ie doubt if it will work without major problems

IMO you need to do a new install but keep your home partition if you have it on a separate partition. ie be sure that the installer does NOT format home

It might be a good idea to say what graphics card you have???

Tell us about your graphic hardware. You might want to try the kernel load option called nomodeset. I have a blog that talks about how to enter the kernel load command 3, to stop the desktop from loading. But instead of a 3, what if you entered nomodeset instead?

Next, after you get up and running, you might want to add nomodeset for use all of the time. You can use my bash script Grub2Cmd to do that which you can find here:

Thank You,

Should I accept the default the installation offers for partitioning? Or select “create”," import"or “edit”? Both default and import look the same to me and both have the home partition on a separate partition. Will home being on a separate partition prevent ***home ***from being reformatted? How do I insure that the installer will not format home? I am confused about what is happening. I do not want to lose my settings etc. Thanks

My graphics card is a Number9 SR9

No you have to edit the partitions details to be sure that that the partition that contains home is NOT formatted! and is mounted as /home. Always inspect the proposed change screen and be sure all is exactly what you want and expect before accepting at that point you can still back out but once you accept you are committed to what is on that screen.

Wow that is an extremely old card how old is this computer and how much memory does ti have? 512meg is minimum for a desktop and 1+ gig is recommended. also a better graphics card

LOL… I told you it was a dog!! I am going to basically use it as a print server. Why cant I install the GNOME desktop on my command based 12.2 that I now have?

Because your install will no doubt have a lot of orphaned packages. You simply should not upgrade from 11.3 to 12.2. Too much has changed in the meantime. Save yourself a lot of annoyance, perform a fresh install leaving /home untouched. In the partitioner you’ll see an “F” for the root partition, and no 'F" for the partition mounted on /home. Which means it’s not going to be formatted.

Thank you for the great information Knurpht, I had seen the F but did not realize that was what it was telling me. I am good for fresh install.
