Lost desktop OS 11.3

Hi all:

Not sure what I did but i’ve lost my desktop. I use classical desktop, not folders and all the icons are gone. Also, the desktop background has been changed from a custom jpeg image to the default image (circles).

How can I recover the desktop or do I need to reconfigure it?

Thanks, Tom

These settings are kept in the .kde directory under your home folder. Is it there? Did it get deleted or renamed maybe?

Maybe You accidentally switched to a different activity. It happened to me in the past.

Best regards,
Greg

OMG! That happened to me a long time ago (about a year). I almost went crazy, couldn’t find my way out. Never heard about activities until then.

On a KDE-4.4.4 desktop, until she learned to lock her widgets, my mother had a habit of deleting all her folders/icons. Fortunately she never touched her Desktop folder on her hard drive (and since then I also backed it up). So in the case of her PC, to restore her folder (with all her icons) was a simple matter to do something like this (click on images to make larger):

Go to the selection for adding widgets …

Locate folder widget:

Drag folder widget to desktop :

Change directory in which folder widget points to:

… continued in next post …

And one gets the main folder back on the KDE4 desktop:

… I have not (yet) encountered the “different activity” configuration so thats also a new possibility to me too.

Hi Brunomcl;
What filename is it under? I didn’t find any file that appeared to do with the desktop.

Thanks, Tom

Hi Oldcpu;
I don’t use folder mode on my desktop, just put shortcuts on the desktop directly. As for the widgets, I always lock them and they are still displayed. Not a great loss as I can easily enough put the shortcuts back on the desktop and restore the background which is a custom image saved in “Pictures”

Thanks for the reply though, Tom
