Losing Wireless Frequently - iwl3945 / OS11.2

Give me a second… I screwed something up posting <_< gotta fix my outputs.

Okay, I can’t edit my OP now it seems, so here’s a new one:

POST Hello OS forums. I’m having a problem with my wireless that I’m hoping someone can help me with. I haven’t figured out what triggers this problem, so as of now the timing seems completely random. I am using “Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG [Golan] Network Connection (rev 02)” to connect to my 802.11g network (Interwebs) which is protected by WPA2 Personal.

Here is my ifconfig output:

/sbin/ifconfig

          inet addr:192.168.2.7 Bcast:192.168.2.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

Here is my iwlist output while everything is working:

Here is my iwconfig output when working:

When everything dies, I see the last beacon time from my connection is growing, and growing, and growing. All the other APs stop showing on the scan list. Shortly afterwards (a minute or two later) the GUI will say connection was lost and ask for the router WPA key repeatedly. At this point, if I try to scan it says the device either doesn’t support scanning or is busy. I will post the iwconfig data of a not-working connection as soon as it breaks again.

More Info: I can fix it every time by disabling and re-enabling wireless via the NetworkManager GUI, however switching my hardware radio switch on/off or attempting to reconnect to the same AP by choosing it from the GUI list do not work.

I have had the same problem with two different laptops/cards.

My office laptop, running 11.1 x64 was great until KDE crashed and I upgraded to 11.2. The wired connection is fine, but the wireless connection drops frequently. It is a Broadcom card and I’ve done the various Broadcom fixes to no avail.

On a second (home) laptop, I have 11.2/x64/KDE, I have exactly the same issue. The card in this machine is an AR928X.

The only way of getting wireless working again for either machine is to reboot.

I am no expert, but there have been a few posts along similar lines, all with different cards. I am starting to suspect that the problem is the latest kernel as I’m 99% sure that everything on the office laptop (with an older kernel) worked before the upgrade.

I could be totally wrong, but does anyone have similar experiences or views on this? And, more importantly, fixes?

Does the output of the ‘dmesg’ command tell you anything when the wireless drops?

What Broadcom version do you have? You can tell that from ‘dmesg | grep b43’
unless you are using the wl driver.

If you unload/reload the driver, does that work instead of rebooting?

I am using/testing 11.2 with 8 different wireless devices. None of them go
offline in the manner you report.

I’ll check next time the connection drops (problem is, the only way I can read the instructions is to reboot…I’ll take a copy this time!)

If you’ve got 8 wireless devices working, the kernel can’t be the problem. Just clutching at any available straw…

Wooo… I hadn’t tried grep iwl after the error occurred before (cause I’m dumb). I don’t know what to do about this, but here’s some potentially useful debugging info:

The Intel group has fixed a number of these “No space for tx” problems. You
might have more success with the wireless-compat package.

I’ll take a look at that now! Thank you!

Well, not to be a noob but… I installed compat-wireless through a Meta Package. What now? Does it just work automagically?

Yes, it should work automagically.

What do the following commands output?

sudo /sbin/modprobe -rv iwl3945
sudo /sbin/modprobe -v iwl3945

It is. You did not get compat-wireless installed, or it is the wrong version for
your kernel.

When I do uname -a I get “Linux linux-mmvn 2.6.31.8-0.1-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2009-12-15 23:55:40 +0100 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux” so I installed compat-wireless-kmp-desktop for x86_64.

I tried to uninstall and then reinstall compat-wireless using

http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/broumbroum23/openSUSE_11.2_oss/HCL-WIFI.ymp

but it said it was unable to install the compat-wireless package.

compat-wireless and compat-wireless-x-debugcode are both installed per yast, but the new driver is not being used over the one which was installed by default. Is there any way to manually define which driver should be used?

It looks like my kernel is dated 12-15-2009, the compat-wireless packages are dated in November.

Do I need to manually recompile the kernel or something?

You need to compile compat-wireless, or downgrade your keernel to 2.6.31.5-xxxx

Thank you all for your help. I was finally able to resolve the problem by reinstalling Windows 7.
