Lose or minimize freezes of intel video driver?

Hello,

Well, this not an OpenSuse-specific problem, for example I also had it in Arch (see Arch Linux Forums / Desperate about X freezes with intel card. Help). With OpenSuse the frequency of these freezes decreased compared to Arch, but today I had four! (and I do not know what made today different…). My card is

VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

After such freezes, I have to shut the computer down with the hardware, because Alt+SysRq+REISUB does nothing. X’s log does not give any clue (because it is a freeze, not a crash), and the computer looks to continue working (so I am pretty sure it is an X’s freeze and not a kernel one).

I am using OpenSuse 11.2, no xorg.conf, and KDE 4.3.4 with desktop effects (I do not want to disable them :\ ). I have also Firefox often running (I do not know whether this can influence).

I tried adding the X repository of OpenSuse and upgrading, but then the X server did not start >:( , so I removed the repository and made zypper dup to downgrade.

Any ideas? Thank you very much in advance

Well, you might not want to turn desktop effects off - but isn’t that the most sensible thing to do, just for diagnostics?

Either it helps or it doesn’t… But it might help narrow it down.
