Looking for KDE3 to KDE4 application migration tool

Greetings

Does anyone have a copy of kde3to4-0.04.tar.gz?

It’s supposed to be a collection of bash scripts. I would really like
to migrate my kde3.5.10 settings into KDE 4.4.4 (OpenSuSE 11.3)

All I’ve been able to find so far are dead links.
An email to the author A.J. Venter at <aj.venter@datacash.co.za>
also ended up as a dud.

Hello durque. I have never heard of the application “kde3to4-0.04.tar.gz”. What openSUSE version are you using right now and are you still using KDE 3.5? So, I run openSUSE 11.3 and KDE 4.4.4, even so I have some KDE 3.5 applications installed. These include Kaffeine/KDE3, KsCD, KDE3.5 Games and KDE3.5 ScreenSavers which all coexist together with KDE4 just fine. What I see in my home area are two hidden folders, one is called .kde (for 3.5) and the other is .kde4 ( for 4.4) and so there are two different setups going on. I am not sure just what you want to do, but I am not sure that updating to a newer version of KDE is going to be that big of a deal for you.

Thank You,

Thanks for your reply. I too have .kde and .kde4. I upgraded my Opensuse 11.1 to run KDE4.2 (I think) which was a disaster by the way all my apps.-settings dissapeared. So I reverted the whole thing. There are som nice howtos out there. Now, what I want is to carry with me KDE 3.5.10 apps.-settings over to KDE4.4.4. My former experience is that a lot of stuff had to be done (configured) a new.

NO matter how you look at it, upgrading to KDE 4 is going to cause some rough spots in your desktop usage. They are not insurmountable though. Obviously my main desktop is KDE 4.4 and I no longer can opt to use KDE 3.5. Still, in KDE 4.4 I can set the menu system to use the “classic style”, I can set my desktop type for “Folder View” and finally, I can run older KDE 3.5 applications just fine under KDE 4.4.

I really have the best of both worlds. I was a very big fan of KDE 3.5, but times move on and the most work for KDE is being done with version 4. You can’t stick with KDE 3.5 forever. So what is my suggestion, consider upgrading to openSUSE 11.3 and KDE 4.4 and then ask how to bring in kde3 applications, which is easy to do. Back up everything you can AND, if you maintained a separate /home area, it is possible to install the new openSUSE version and not formatting your old home area, thus preserving all of your settings. Always do a by file backup of all irreplaceable data to a separate partition before considering doing a system wide update and good luck with what ever you decide to do.

Thank You,

A lot depends on what programs you are using; with text, there are no problems. With Kontact, there are slightly different ways of migrating the files for the different elements; with KMail use Import to bring over the KDE3 files but I moved Contacts and Calendar simply by copying them from .kde to .kde4. With Kaffeine, the latest version of Kaffeine will happily read KDE3 files. What you cannot normally do is copy over the settings which have to be recreated in KDE4.

Thanks for your insight.
The reason why I was looking for kde3to4-0.04.tar.gz in the first place was exactly what you suggested, move on from KDE 3.5.10 to OpenSuSE 11.3 (KDE 4.4.4). Under ~/.kde3 (former .kde)/share/apps I have about 40 directories. I anticipate that I get into lot of reconfiguring stuff for the apps. that I was using under KDE 3.5.10.

I’ll check over at KDE-Apps.org if someone has a copy of kde3to4-0.04.tar.gz lying around.

The Mandriva site talks about a migration script for kde3.5.10 to kde4.0 with a footnote not to use the script beyond kde4.0 as it will incorrectly transfer settings that could lead to complete failure of kde4 to operate. The script isn’t named except that it belongs to Mandriva-2008-1 and is no longer available as of march 2008.

I can relate to your strife, I too can’t see the reasoning behind releasing a new version that is so dumbed down that it doesn’t have a means of migrating settings from the previous to the new. IMHO let’s face it, all the info is on your system to direct a migration tool, the RPM’s database has the list of all installed apps which can be screened for the KDE stuff inclusive of versioning. As ROOT privileges are used during upgrade, the system can be scanned for users and the apps they have set up. Finally the developers know what changes they made between versions (clue: look at the change logs) to meet requirements.

Rant The computer is a fast idiot, that knows how to do what it’s told in a very fast and precise way. What does that make developers then that can’t tell the super capable computer how to do an upgrade?

I got an answer from the author of kde3to4. His reply below is quoted with approval:

*"It’s not under development anymore since there are no longer any
distributions that ship with kde3 and have kde4 as an update so while
it was useful to a LOT of people once, it’s useless to most people
now.
I’ll see if I still have the code somewhere but frankly your best bet
is to just back up your kde3 directory, remove your kde4 directory and
rename the kde3 to it, most apps today will just import the old
settings, unlike early versions - they are now GOOD at it and you
don’t need a coded database to figure out which ones will break.
