Looks like I’ll be giving Amazon Prime’s free trial a chance and maybe canceling my netflix if it’s just as good (though I guess I can still use my ps3 to watch instantly):
Ubuntu & Linux Mint Compatible Amazon Prime Unlimited Instant Video Streaming Now Available! at

and, is it really restricted to “Ubuntu & Linux Mint”??

It should work on any distro that has these requirements:
Amazon.com Includes Linux Users in New Movie Streaming Service
Their system requirements are an Intel Pentium 4 2.33GHz processor or equivalent, Firefox 1.5 or above, the most recent versions of JavaScript and Adobe Flash Player, and a broadband Internet connection.
Looks like its restricted to the US right now, but they’re eying up the European market too since Netflix isn’t there:
informitv - Amazon Prime online video delivery
The Amazon service is currently restricted to the United States.
….
There is no word as yet whether the Amazon Prime instant streaming service will be extended to Europe, but it seems highly likely.
Will give this a shot in the next couple days and post my thoughts. Their $79/year price is cheaper than netflix anyway. If it works, I’m canceling netflix on the principle of the matter.

this is a particularly annoying shortcoming and i don’t think it will ever be remedied, at least in an opensource solution. i went with a hardware hack.
went to Fry’s and purchased a WDTVLive box for $100US and another CAT5e cable, hooked it up to the router and the HDMI input available on my monitor. After hooking up the power and adding the audio as an auxiliary input to the Audigy2 card i was set to go.
toggle the use the WDTVLive box with the video input select on the monitor, control the audio on the desktop.
Drawbacks are switching back and forth DURING the playing of a movie breaks the HDMI DRM verification loop and the movie refuses to resume and must be restarted. Also, the playback is limited to full screen.
Positives are the device also can serve as a NAS through it’s USB port (i use a 1TB Hitachi External) and it will play almost any vid/audio file on the drive (or via SMB over the network) much better than they play natively on the computer. Some codecs are not supported well (mkv’s are worrisome). Also, other internet services are supported such as, youTube/Pandora/etc which keep growing with updates to the internal software.
all in all it was a hugely beneficial gadget, more so than i originally anticipated.
No, it’s not. All that’s required is the Flash player.
