Logitech Speakers

I’m running 11.2 KDE 4.3.5. I’m trying to get Logitech Z-5 USB Speakers to work with my desktop. On the speakers show up on kmix and in the multimedia settings and I made them top preferred. Sound happens when I test them but none of the programs (Rythmbox, Firefox, Alert Noises etc.) produce any sound. Does anyone know how to fix this?

(Also I tried different USB ports to no avail)

Take a look at this article for USB headphones … it is also likely true for USB speakers:

If you are using KDE, there is a selection under the MENU called “Configure Desktop” > “Multimedia” where you can select the output device preference. For sound in firefox and system sounds, that has to be set appropriately in an order of sound devices that matches the order of devices in YaST > Hardware > Sound for this to work, and its possible the USB speakers need to be device 0.

I have no such USB device but my recollection is this is not dynamically friendly. ie you can’t get it working, unplug, reboot, not have them in place, and get existing speakers at will. ie you need to set up one hardware configuration and stick with that, … although I could be wrong. …
