login stalls with kernel-default-4.5.1-2.1

On an HP Pavilion 17-p105ng,
kernel-default-4.1.20-11.1.x86_64 and kernel-default-4.5.1-2.1.gfd7ad3d.x86_64 installed and run ok

Yes, both were working fine with kernel-default-4.1.15-8.1.x86_64 installed when the update was attempted

Again, both kernels can co-exist just fine, and are independent of each other.
That also means that not all kernel modules will work fine on both of them necessarily.

The problem installing both kernels on HP Pavilion g7-2248sg was Secure Boot related.

After bios selection changes and clean up both kernels are now installed and kernel-default-4.1.20-11.1.x86_64 is currently being used

when kernel-default-4.5.1-2.1.gfd7ad3d.x86_64 is selected the boot stalls at the login: password: window and waits for ever (> 10 minutes) with message

“A start job is running for Modem Manager”
“A start job is running for SuSEfirewall2”

and kbd inputs have no effect!

Can these jobs be time limited?
Can they be stopped from starting?

cheers

Hi, maybe the stricter memory space protection scheme used in kernel 4.5.x prevents a service from starting up?
Try booting with option iomem=relaxed added to the kernel command line.

hi OrsoBruno,

thx for the feedback

tried the suggestion but it still stalls in exactly the same way

cheers
