Login slower since update

Hi. First post here, but I’ve been using Tumbleweed for about 18 months now. Can generally find my answers from reading other peoples posts here, but this time I don’t see my problem mentioned.

Yesterday I did my usual zypper dup to update my system. When I rebooted afterwards I noticed that it took much longer to log back in than usual. I can get to the login screen ok, but when i enter my password the lightbulb and gear stay on screen for around 30 sec, followed by a black screen with only a mouse pointer for around 30 sec, followed by my desktop background for around 30 sec, and then finally i get my desktop icons and bottom panel showing. Normally the lightbulb & gear screen is only visible for a few seconds.

I’ve done some investigation and i think there is a problem with smartd.service. It takes about two minutes for it to timeout and fail. I don’t think there’s a problems with my ssds as I can still use smartctl to query them and manually read their smart data.

Thanks for any help. I’ll link in some system info below:

OK, first post, and I now feel a bit of a numpty as I’ve solved it.

I have a USB to SATA adapter that I use to perform my backups onto an external drive. I’ve just noticed that it was still attached to my PC (usually unplug when not in use). I removed it and the PC booted at its normal quick speed. I even thought about it at work today as to whether I’d left that cable in. In my defence the PC is behind my desk and the USB ports not readily visible ;o)

Thanks for listening anyway.

I would say the solving a problem oneself is mostly a satisfying experience.

In any case: welcome to the openSUSE forums.
