I’ve done a fresh install of openSUSE 3 times already today and each time I have the same problem. Unless I choose “login automatically” when installing, I can’t login. I type the username and password I know are correct and the login manager gives me an error saying “Unable to authenticate user.” I consider myself proficient with Linux and I honestly have no idea why this would happen especially on a fresh install. What am I doing wrong? Any help with this would be hugely appreciated.
I didn’t see this issue b4.
Did you check the Caps lock while creating new password and while using it after installation?
Any special characters used?
Also, try num-lock.
If that doesn’t work, scour your system for keyboard layout settings perhaps?.. there’s one in grub I believe. Don’t know if it’ll change anything, but worth a shot.
Num lock - refer to this thread.
Yup, tried everything, including reinstalling and setting the password to one character even though the installer complains about it. Still the same error.

When at the login screen can you select console login from the drop down
menu ( session ) and login on the commandline with your user and pass?
just wondering if the WM keysetting are b0rked but not the console.
You did not choose a different authentication did you while installing?
cannot remember the options but something like AES, Blowfish etc… on the
password page.
Also
Stupid question here and don`t shout just going through the possibilities:
You are using a user account and not root?

What happens if you change the password is it the same. By the way you can change login automatically from the terminal…
So can login as root/user at the terminal ctrl alt f1 for example. Presuming the above works, the easiest would be to copy /usr/share/kde4/config/kdm/kdmrc then replace it. So if you use the gui apply the settings then copy the file. Then change to not auto login it will at least save you reinstalling whilst you trouble shoot it.
I’m inclined to think that the keyboard is different i.e you have regional settings and keyboard layout in desktop settings set to one and yast set to another or one or the other set to none. Though if this is the case then I suspect login even at the terminal will be impossible so the above may not help.
Nope, no console login option, only GNOME. I used the default option for authentication during installation. And, no, I’m not logging in as root, just a regular user.
I haven’t been able to log in to change the password without selecting automatic login at install time, so I wouldn’t know. I also never touched the keyboard settings during installation, just left them at the default for USA.
I will try dropping back to the terminal during login to see if that works though.

If at the grub boot screen you type “3” without the quotes it will be added
to the end of the kernel options for the booting o/s.
This will start you in runlevel 3 which has no Xserver running, can you
login there OK as user or root?
If it is a prob with the keyboard setting in X alone then you should be able
to.
apologies for late reply had to do some work ( I know, I know swearing is
not allowed on the forum )
