Hello,
I updated OpenSuSE 10.3 to 11.4 via a DVD. After having a coffe (as suggested by many), the new LINUX seem to have rebooted with a failure at runlevel 5 (Network services failed to start).
A login prompt was shown and my old root or user login and password were recognised, but the start up was immediately interrupted with the messages:
“”""""""""""""""""""""
Module not found.
Welcome to OpenSUSE … Celadon …
Hint:
“”""""""""""""""""""""
And then the login prompt appeared again. I was not able to login.
I would be grateful for any help.
Greetings
Andreas
You can not update 10.3 to 11.4.
Do a new install.

Yes you can, via DVD. It is supported, but not in a single jump.

Boot to runlevel 3, try to login as root, find out packages that were not
upgraded.

Many thanks for your help. I thought modern Linux was as easy as Windows. I don’t know how to boot to runlevel 3, neither how to find out packages that were not upgraded. I will do a new install.
Many thanks for your info
Andreas
A new install is by far the easiest method in your case.
Whilst an upgrade might work, it can be tricky and is generally not recommended, at least not from such an older version.
FYI: Modern Linux is easier than windows. In reality most people never have to install windows from scratch without all the software patches and drivers added by the vendor. If they did, they would be tearing their hair out in no time.

It is easier! Just try to install windows from scratch, download all the
drivers for all your hardware pieces, all the upgrades, and reboot a
hundred times. Not forgetting the antivirus, firewall, etc, and often with
payment.

I thought you knew, because you have been using 10.3, which is from 2007.
Just say so and ask. To boot into runlevel 3 you just have to type “3” and
enter at the grub boot screen. The other is more complicated, and I will
not enter into details as you intend to install fresh. It could be done
with a zypper up (perhaps dups), unless you have a complicated repo structure.
Yes, installing fresh is usually simpler. Upgrading also works, but it also
comes with problems different from the normal set.
