I did an upgrade from 12.1 to 12.2 following the instructions using zypper rather than yast
I suspect there are multiple problems, but start with the first.
I use xfce. i use kdm. Thelogin screen appears fine with the various choices
of desktops. when i try to login, it just takes my password and then presents the
login screen again. If I go to console mode i can log in fine.
Some of what I know, the /etc/X11/xdm directory is essentially empty.
the Xsetup and all other X… are missing. Only a file called Xsession.rpmsave is there.
So unless suse made a pretty big change, there is a problem there. how do i fix it?
Now when somebody tells me what to do, it will probably involve zypper.
if I try to use zypper, i get the error message
file not found libxml2.so.2. of course it is there linked to libxml2.so.2.7.8
I don’t know what other information would be most useful, but will provide it upon request.

Ah.

Assuming that the upgrade broke in the middle and things were not
upgraded, you can try instead an offline upgrade. Boot the DVD, choose
upgrade instead of install.
As you suggested, i booted the dvd and did an offline upgrade. Most repostiories were marked removed for some reason.
i enabled them and proceeded. a few packages were updated, but the results were unchanged. I still have the
two problems mentioned before
zypper missing libraries and the login takes the login and then returns to the login menu.

Wrong, do not enable them.
Do the upgrade, check that things work, later start changing or adding
repos.
