I am using openSUSE for constructing a Linux system using the Linux From Scratch book, with two accounts, “normal” and “lfs”.
Logged into “lfs” account, I was trying to compile GCC 4.7.1 from source, but the system crashed.
After rebooting, openSUSE refuses to log me into the “lfs” account. It shows only a black screen, then it returns to the login screen.
I found some posts related to my problem, where it says to edit the /etc/sysconfig/cron file at the section “CLEAR_TMP_DIRS_AT_BOOTUP” with the parameter “yes”.
I rebooted again, but still the same problem.
Please allways state the version of openSUSE you use and when you use a desktop, which one.
And when you say “refuses to log me into the “lfs” account.”, you better explain more.
Is this a login into the GUI, or in the command line console?
When in the GUI, does it show login screen?
Etc, etc.
Also " but the system crashed." is a casual remark without any technical details.
We are not sitting behind you and does can not see what you are doing and how the system echos. Do nolt assume that there is only one way to do things and that others thus immediatly will understand thoses things you do not explain.
IMHO there is no clue that his root file system is full, let alone that this is due to (the number of) files growing out of proportion in /tmp, otther then that the OP has read “somewhere on the internet” that a full root partition wil prevent a login. But there are many causes that can prevent a login.

what is the date that book was published?
in the preface/intro (whatever) does it mention which distro it was
designed to companion with? or, does the book include install media
for any distro?
what is the kernel of that distro?
the reason is: there have probably been 300 or 1,000 books written in
the last 20 years about linux that would be just about worthless in
setting up openSUSE 12.2
instead, point a browser to
file:///usr/share/doc/manual/opensuse-manuals_en/manual/index.html
Sorry for the delay, but the laptop’s memory was faulty. That is why it crashed. It was showing a black screen then turned off suddenly.
I can’t login in the GUI, but in console works. In GUI it shows the openSUSE background then it returns to the login screen.
I also forgot to say I use GNOME 3 and when I log now into the lfs account, the screen turns black and shows some messages, then it returns to the login screen. I tried to read the messages, but they are scrolling fast on the screen.
