Login greeter widget disappeared

I installed the pam_face_recognition package to try out but decided I couldn’t get it working properly so removed it via YAST. Now when I boot up I get a pop up dialogue saying the login greeter widget is missing and to check my configuration. Clicking OK on the pop up drops me to the console login.

Anyone know how I can get the GUI login widget to show up again when my system starts?

So, I don’t know what you removed, but if you do not have any desktop or login screen then you can run YaST from the Terminal Prompt in run level 3. Once you get to the login screen do this:

login: yourname
password: xxxxxxx
prompt: su -
root's password: xxxxxxx
prompt: yast

I think I would search for kde or login and load or reload them if missing or just to make sure that is not the problem. Try anything else you think you might have removed. Now, if you load any special video drivers, they may need to be reloaded, such as might occur with a kernel update which will also keep the desktop from loading.

Thank You,

Thanks for replying. All I did was remove the pam_face_authentication package and kdm_plugin for the pam face authentication package. I managed to get into the desktop by logging in at the konsole and then starting x. I also tried reloading all packages with greet, pam, kde or login but it didn’t fix the issue. I eventually resorted to restoring the day before backup which fixed the problem.

Well hooray for backups then. Happy to hear you had a recent backup to use. On more than one occasion, I too have had backups that saved the day, including one a couple of years ago with my work computer. But I think that more often than not, I have not had a current backup and reloading was my only alternative. So, good for you on having a backup to use.

Thank You,

This is my main work computer so I have regular backups running. Unfortunately, I learned the hard way a few years ago so now have a bit of a belt and braces strategy when it comes to backups.
