One very specific issue regarding KDE in OpenSuse 11.3
when I close the lid of my laptop or get into a screen saver mode, sometimes when the xserver comes back to life it basically goes back to the KDE login menu (log out) without any warning…
I have looked at the detailed settings and power performance management but nothing there… I am in fact in “don’t do anything” mode (power management) but this does not seem to do much.
Any idea where this comes from or how to solve it?
You should tell us what version of KDE that you are using. For instance, the standard release is at 4.4.4, but it is possible to upgrade to 4.5.2 right now. Further, you should tell us the brand of Laptop that you are using, so we can look up hardware related issues as well. Finally, you do indicate you are using openSUSE 11.3, but is that the 32 or 64 bit variety? Much of what I ask for is located in the “My Computer” icon on the desktop.
OpenSuse 11.3 on a Dell E4300, Intel Core TM 2 Duo P9600
with a Mobile INtel GM45 Express Chipset card
Kernel is 2.6.34.7-0.3-desktop x86_64 (so 64bist)
KDE is 4.4.4 release 3
any help is welcome… I must admit I have so many problems with the current set up (graphics mostly) that I thought of going back to 11.2…
I just upgraded to KDE 4.5 (Factory repo) just to see if things were better then. Well it looks the same.
Basically, having two screens (the laptop LVDS, and one attached dell), when closing the lid, and opening it again, I have only a display on the external screen (the LVDS is disabled) and I need to go again with the display setttings. And sometimes it just log me out completely in fact and I get back a stupid 1024x768 resolution on both screens.

emsellem, I am not sure I would have upgraded to KDE 4.5 as the CPU speed control is removed from KDE 4 control. You should go into YaST, search on power or yast and install the YaST power module. This then provides the ability to for openSUSE to control CPU speed to either dynamic or full speed, thought the options in YaST power are very stark and not straight forward as to just what it does.
Well thanks for that feedback, but 1- I did tune the options for the energy saving thing using the Power Management part and forced to do NOTHING when the lid closes… Obviously this does not work, both in KDE 4.4 and 4.5… On the other hand it would be quite bad to have the lid closed and not being able to just open it up again and get this kind of behaviour (since closing the lid and not having the LVDS screen going blank is far from optimal).
Anyway, same story whaveter I set up for the option for the closed lid, it goes the same way. Similar story if the screen saver is on (so I disabled it). Annoying…
