logging into a KDE, Gnome, etc as root

someone, somewhere needs to write a BIG NOTE that can’t be missed by the
new folks (or old folks) streaming in from that operating system that
starts with a big W or M…something like:

NEVER EVER log into KDE, Gnome, or any other graphical user interface or
window manager or desktop environment as root…

ALWAYS log in as a normal user and then use the super powers of root via
YaST, Personal Settings, terminal, sudo, kdesu . . .

and give some good reasons/dangers/pitfalls/etc…

Come join me at the brick wall, I’ve reserved a place for you… (oh
don’t forget a good supply of beer!)

Honestly, they will do it no matter what. It won’t be until the screw
up or get owned because the left a root window open overnight that they
will learn. Then you say, well get your backup out… you do have a
backup don’t you?

Having come from a Teleco Network Management background, most changes
have to be tested, re tested, backed up, before you can even start to
make changes etc and we still screw up at times, there is also the
blessing of having redundant servers

it is just that i’ve seen it over and over in this (web) forum that old
“Windows experts” come here and successfully install and then a month
later are already giving back to open source by answering the brand new
“n00b’s” questions with stuff like “log in as root and open the control
center” or, what was it i saw? oh some guy was having problems with kde
(or ??) and the ‘expert’ told him something like “it is real easy to fix
just run ‘rm -r *’ and then the next time ya boot all the configs will
be rebuilt”

that is, what would you call it? a disaster waiting to happen.

Tuborg or Carlsberg ok with you?

Very true, just need to forget where you are and who you are and one
borked system… sigh oh well we live and learn

Hmmm, been a long time since I had a Tuborg  I’m sure that will help
with the headache lol
