the HP laptop you bought most likely came with SUSE Linux Enterprise
Desktop (SLED) installed…
we here work with openSUSE…you should be over in forums.novell.com
where the SLED gurus hang out…

i’ve never bought an HP with SLED so i don’t know…but, maybe it
came with some printed instructions on how to set your user name and
password (i mean, how would the factory know what you wanted to use??)
(are windows computers delivered from the seller with a userID and
pass preset? wouldn’t know that either, the last one of those i bought
was in '92 and it didn’t use either ID or pass…)

No, windoze uses a firstboot routine to configure users, just like most linux distros.
If SLED was installed, the dealer should have given you something showing the “root” password. Log in as root and use useradd command to create a new user. As root, you should also be able to view /etc/passwd (or whatever that distro calls it) and find any original users login.
