You might have more info in the logs.

how do i access the logs?

they are in /var/logs…you can see them with any simple text file
reader, like kwrite, gedit, mc, vim, joe, emacs…you can even use cat
and less…

but, i wonder if this is your first install…hmmmm, see you have been
here since July 2008, so i guess this isn’t your first…huh?

i guess hardware fault…or software mismatch…do you have a mix of
oss and factory/evergreen/tumbleweed software??

please show us the terminal input/output from

zypper lr -d
cat /etc/SuSE-release
kde4-config --version

copy/paste the in/output back to this thread using the instructions

yes, I formated and i did reinstall opensuse, what does that mean

if you boot from the install disk and do this http://tinyurl.com/3qde66h
with no errors then you know your install media is good…

then, boot from the disk again and select the last entry “Memory Test”
and let it run for 12 hours or so (no less)…

then, you know you have good RAM…

then if you use the good install media and formatted ALL linux
partitions, including /home (you do have a good backup of all data,
right?) and then install with no errors…

then, before you begin messing with customizing your system or adding
software (outside of oss, non-oss, packman and update) you should have
NO “general protection faults” unless you have hardware problems
somewhere in your system…could be mother board, could be wiring, could
be ground problem, could be faulty keyboard controller, etc etc etc…

please read carefully:

  • boot from your install disk

  • using the arrow keys move the highlight DOWN (past Install, Rescue,
and whatever) to “Check Installation Media”

  • press enter

  • it will NOT begin installing openSUSE again! instead, it will check
the install disk to make sure it is a 100% perfect copy of the master
install disk…it will check a while and then TELL you if it found any
    errors…

– if if finds any error (even just one) do NOT use that disk for
anything ever again

– you must make a new, 100% perfect disk before you go further

– there is plenty of help in the wiki and these forums on how to get
a perfect disk

  • if you have no errors reported, then BOOT from the install disk and
again using the arrow keys move the highlight DOWN (past Install,
Rescue, and Check Installation Media) to “Memory Test”

  • press enter, and then the disk will check all of your RAM for errors
(it could easily be a bad RAM section which caused your “general
    protection fault” and freeze

– the test takes a LONG time…most people recommend you let it run
at least 12 hours…it will make one pass in maybe 10 minutes and it
might look good but then if it errors after 14 hours then you have a RAM
stick to throw away…

any error is TOO MANY, you must solve the problem…ask here how
(if it errors)

and ?

how many partitions did you think/expect you had? and why?

but, i want to know: you said in your first post that the system “frooze
up”…is it no longer frozen? is there no longer a problem?

i must ask because i need to know if it is still frozen how did you look
at “My Computer”, as well as why you would mention only two partitions…

color me confused!

checking disk now
ill run the memory test tonight.
i looked at the Url, the dvd install photo 12 of 37, and other places saying there should be 3 partition, so i was curious how many i had and found i had only two partitions / and home . i dont have a swap partition, am i suppose to? just thought Id mention that i have only two maybe that is a problem maybe it isnt dont know… i just remember my last install had three partition.
nope it isnt frozen anymore, it froze up when i saw that service message pop up

It is curious, yes. You normally should also have a swap partition. It is
not mandatory but recommended -depending on how much memory you have and
how much you normally use.

good! one potential cause has been eliminated…

maybe that will eliminate another potential cause…

yes, and i guess you probably do…

only it is not shown in “My Computer” (don’t ask me why not…my swap
here is not in my “My Computer” either…)

but, if you open a terminal and copy/paste this into it:

cat /etc/fstab | grep swap

and you will see where your swap is…mine says:

/dev/disk/by-id/ata-Hitachi_[snip]-part5 swap swap defaults

and

cat /proc/partitions

shows me that the “part 5” swap space is 2 GB, here:

major minor #blocks name

8 5 2097100 sda5

> nope it isnt frozen anymore, it froze up when i saw that service
> message pop up

well! it may not freeze again…just use it, it could have been a one
time fluke because of the update in progress…in other words, i don’t
think you need to run the machine over night to check the RAM…but, if
you get the General Protection Fault again, then do it…

like me, you have 2GB of swap…which should be just about perfect!

what do i exactly look for in the warning logs?
located at /var/log

i see many of these local system message service pop up. are they just messages or are they warning of bad things?

i see many of these messages through out my warning logs but at different times, here is one- Dec 3 04:56:47 linux kernel: 6.479805] mei: module is from the staging directory, the quality is unknown, you have been warned.

Dec 9 03:10:41 linux-fjj3 kernel: 290.858996] Disabling IRQ #16

the last one was Dec 9 03:12:58 linux-fjj3 kernel: 427.462452] hub 3-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 3

/var/log/warn. You try to find the same messages you get in the popups.
