I’ve noticed that I no longer get security releases via Yast for my Opensuse 11.1. So I’m now running on out of date Firefox and Flash etc. However, my system is very stable, and I’m not really looking forward to wiping the disk and installing the latest version. How safe am I to continue using my 11.1 system? Or do I need to bite the bullet?
Wiping the disk seems a bit too drastic.
You can hold out for a bit, but imho there comes a moment that you are stuck, wanting a new piece of software or a new feature in a new level of something. Better plan an upgrade now when you are not under pressure.
For the security part I can not decide how importamt it is for you, but there also you will bit by bit become more vulnarable.

I was in the same boat with you where my laptop was concerned. I resisted upgrading because I was unsure about my hardware compatablity. I discovered that openSUSE 11.3 handles my hardware a lot better than 11.1 did. My wireless card worked immedately. Not so with 11.1 and I was able to compile and install my compiz-0.8.4 packages with emerald, and AWN too. Yeah, you compiz guys who gave up on emerald. It does compile. Only three lines needed changing.
Anyhow, I just backed-up what was important to me from the laptop to one of my servers (I have seven - don’t ask why - I just do), and first played with the upgrade. I didn’t like the result, so I did a fresh install.
I was a militant Fedora 7 user, for years in fact, and I always hated the brain-dead suggestion offered up by most people that upgrading would solve all my problems, but in this case, I found it was true. I understand that openSUSE 11.4 does even a better job with hardware, support and usage. As soon as it settles down a bit and if I can figure out a way to install it on my Dell server, I will most likely be going that way too. At least with openSUSE, they don’t make you upgrde every six-months and abandon you after a year or so.
Give it a shot. Just take percautions first and use your common sense. Good luck!

You might have some problems with the packman repo. As 11.1 doesn’t seem to be a priority, it might be long til they solve that key pb .

neither me, nor anyone here knows your situation there (for example:
how you use your system…big difference in an answer if it is a rack
mounted server with apache, ftp, etc etc etc running…or a laptop)
so, i wouldn’t advise you to do anything but upgrade…
on the other hand i ran 10.3 about 15 months past end of life, and had
no fear…but, i take a lot of precautions…
you might wanna take a look at something new, a way to extend the life
of what you have, see:

It is well past its end of life. Your options are evergreen, or upgrade, or
reinstall. You can test 11.4 on a free partition.

my bank changed their software and i had to move up some to get it to
work again…but, getting 11.3 stable was not so hard actually…so
far…i know it will go a lot more stable when it passes end of
life…(i hold my breath every time there is an ‘update’)
