What is Kwin?

Using openSUSE-13.1-KDE-Live-i686.iso

System data:

Asus A8V motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 3200+
1G memory
nVidia GeForce4 mx 4000

I though Linux was suppose to run on older hardware?
Both Kubuntu and Mint KDE live DVD’s work without errors!

KWin is the window manager. The program that manages the windows, window decorations, lets you drag them around, resize them and so on…

Well, it works fine here on the same Motherboard, but with a Athlon64 3000+ and a Radeon 9600 gfx card.

Most likely that’s a problem with the “nouveau” graphics driver.
Does KWin work when you click on “Restart Application” or does it crash again?

Try to press ‘F3’ and select “No KMS” at the Boot Screen, it should work then.

Kwin is a basic part of KDE the X windows manager.

Any number of reason it might fail. Maybe not enough memory. KDE is a memory hog. And if you are running from the live DVD then you are using a lot more memory for things like the file systems, temp files, cache etc that would not be used by an installed system.

If you are running from an installed system it could be a video issue and you might want to install the NVIDIA driver.

You can always chose a lighter desk top which may be better for old hardware.
