lists.opensuse.org - a snail in treacle?

Not a support question per se, so posting here as I’m curious to see if I’m alone or if this is a widespread problem.

Since the introduction of new software (some time ago now) for the list management of “lists.opensuse.org” I find that very frequently it is painfully slow.

A traceroute shows no obvious problem in reaching “lists.opensuse.org”:

paul@HP255G7:~> sudo traceroute -T -O info lists.opensuse.org

Monitoring the page load (with Firefox Developer Tools -> Network) it is invariably one or more, generally more, of the requests shown in this screenshot: https://paste.opensuse.org/view/raw/2c17c269 that it appears to be choking on.

In this instance seven requests that are taking between approx 4 and 9 seconds per request…

Just me?

No, it’s not just you.

I used to check the factory mailing list several times per day. Now I do it only once, and that is still an unpleasant experience.

The old software (what was used a year ago), was so much better.

If I do see an interesting topic and decide to read that, my browser now downloads the entire thread and I have to scroll through it to find what has been added since I last looked.

I can guess why it is so slow. It is transferring lots more data. But most of that is data that I don’t want to see.

This is the newer “better” way – it just makes the software work harder, the person work harder and the experience less satisfying. Can we go back to the older “worser” way, because that was far better.

Hi
I use nntp, no issues on that side  But yes, the web ui is running slow. Best to create a progress ticket for the Heroes team send an email to admin {at} opensuse {dot} org

OK. Thanks, it’s good to not be alone

I concur completely.

Without hesitation I second that motion.

Will do, task for this evening, need to go out shortly…

OK, done, just sent an e-mail to the Heroes Team.

The current archive view hurts usability, no deep links with distinct visited styling, etc. The way timestamps are formatted are just a bad idea. The older online archive wasn’t perfect but for casual viewing it was good enough.

Acknowledged as a problem, progress ticket for anyone interested: https://progress.opensuse.org/issues/101848

Thanks. (plus useless filler to avoid complaint about the length of the reply)

@nrickert (and others…)

I’ve taken to using this: https://marc.info/?l=opensuse-factory&r=1&w=3

Thanks. That might be easier to use.
