Listening to online radio

Hi everyone,

I am currently using openSuse 11.3, it’s really great. One thing, however, I’ve noticed is that some online radio stations that I used to listen to from other Linux distros or even Windows, are not being loaded in openSuse for some reason. I am not sure what is the cause of this. I did install Fluendo plugin to play online media which I didn’t do in other Linux distros but I am not sure if it’s Fluendo or not. Could somebody please tell me if there is a way to tweak network performance in openSuse so I could get online radio stations to play?

Thank you,
Victor.

Online radio can be played in many ways. Exactly how do you listen to it?
Thru a browser
With a application like amarok…

Hi. I am using a Banshee Media Player. I paste the location of the online radio source and add it to the Radio station listings. I also tried to open it directly from the browser using Totem Video player and the result was the same - it just said “buffering” for a very long time (up to a point when I just give up and close the app.).

Thank you,
Victor.

The fact that some work suggests your codecs are ok
It’s not something I do much of, but when I do I generally use Firefox and listen direct from the stations web site.
It could be worth trying VLC if you must use something other than a web browser.

If you want to post a link to one you can’t play, I’ll try it here

Hi,

Thank you so much for the follow up. The link for the station is this one. It’s a Russian Radio. It also has the capability to invoke its own player and the result is still the same, very long time to buffer. It’s strange because it works fine in other distributions but I’d rather use SuSe because it has other important features that other distros lack.

I click on the 128Kbps option or copy and paste URL into Banshee.

Ðóññêîå ðàäèî â Íèæíåì Íîâãîðîäå. 102,9 FM](http://www.rusradio.nnov.ru/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=46&Itemid=53)

Thanks again for looking into this.

Victor.

Hi! Just a quick update. I’ve installed VLC and it loaded the station very quickly now! Thank you so much for letting me know about the VLC application

Best,
Victor.

Not playing for me either. Unfortunately it doesn’t tell us what it is missing.
I’ll check on it again later with a different install and let you know.

OK
Good
Totem came up as default for me. VLC is pretty good for most stuff.
