I am unable to find a comprehensive guide online (I think there was one
created by caf4926 but is now gone/unavailable). I got the short list
below from Google cache records for the 1 click kde installs.
Some of the following were already installed or I installed them
out of habit (*)
This is Google’s cache of http://opensuse-community.org/codecs-kde.ymp.
It is a snapshot of the page as it appeared on Jan 1, 2016
The current page could have changed in the meantime.
Soon after install I enable Packman repo and switch system packages to
it and all the default installed multimedia programs and libraries get
upgraded (together with required dependencies) from there. All updates
will henceforth come from Packman repo.
Various multimedia programs/applications pull in their own dependencies
and thus I have a variety of gstreamer packages (some of which were
supposedly to be deprecated already in 13.1 but I see them installed by
default in 13.2, e.g. gstreamer-0_10* packages).
I would like to have a comprehensive list of multimedia codecs required
for 13.2 in the KDE, Gnome and Xfce DE and a list of deprecated
gstreamer plugins and/or other codec packages.
Following is recommended for Leap 42.1 (and is the only guide available):
13.1 Codec Installation with YaST Software Management
First add/enable the repositories with YaST Software Repositories:
Packman Repository
libdvdcss repository (skip if you don’t need DVD playback)
tip If the concepts of package manager and repositories are
foreign to you, revisit the chapters Installing Software and
Software Repositories.
Then install the following packages with YaST Software Management:
k3b-codecs
ffmpeg
lame
phonon-backend-vlc
phonon4qt5-backend-vlc
vlc-codecs
libdvdcss2 (skip if you don’t need DVD playback)
flash-player
Finally remove/uninstall the following packages with YaST Software
Management:
afaik
phonon-backend-vlc, phonon4qt5-backend-vlc are broken and phonon-backend-gstreamer, phonon4qt5-backend-gstreamer still work so no do not do that
someone should contact http://opensuse-community.org/ admin to remove that line, or someone should file a bugreport regarding phonon-backend-vlc
phonon-backend-vlc is build against an older version of vlc and doesn’t work with vlc 2.2.1

And it requires the following:
“You are not logged in or you do not have permission to access this
page. This could be due to one of several reasons:…”
Why must one be logged in and posses an account in order to access
basic info?
Secondly. this link leads to a Leap guide and not to 13.2 (I assume)

Hi,
I am using 13.2 Kde4 (fresh install) on main system and Xfce and Gnome
versions on other partitions of same machine for test/trial use (never
used either DE on openSUSE previously but now need to evaluate
alternatives to Leap Kde5) and I am looking for an openSUSE 13.2
multimedia codecs guide/s (detailed, if possible).
As for phonon-backend-vlc, I thought I could try it on 13.2 and it
installed OK (this also pulls in an extra (vcore7?) package) but
caused Dolphin file manager to have crashes (the Dolphin crash bug info
indicated phonon-backend-vlc was the cause). I uninstalled it and
reinstalled all removed packages and all is OK now.
it’s an old bug phonon-backend-vlc 0.8 (for openSUSE 13.2) was build against vlc 2.1 and both oss and packman carry vlc 2.2.1
the updated phonon-backend-vlc 0.8.2 (for LEAP and TW) seams to have been build against vlc 2.2
so it might work under leap, but the gstreamer backent definitely works.

Hi Gerry,
Sauerland already provided the link (as well as me finding it via
Google) BUT, as I have stated a few times in this thread, I am
unable to access it - I need to be logged in (I don’t have an account
for the forums and don’t think one should need one just to access that
info). Thus I would appreciate it if you could verify for me that
a login account is needed to view that page. If that is not the case,
then I am (or my isp is) being denied access for some reason.

Thanks for the feedback and this info is good to know. I did a bit of
searching via Google and managed to locate much (or most) of the old
info posted by ‘caf4926’ as well some more info by others from the
openSUSE community. I was going to post it here but hit another
bump with a Firefox bug and have been chasing my tail for few hours
with that issue. I will post brief info in the Applications forum
and see if it has already been covered.
Well, actually, I didn’t log out. I just used a private browsing window.
The restricted page is a forum blog page. I didn’t know that those were restricted.
In any case, the differences between the 13.2 list and the 42.1 list are small. Since the OP has the 42.1 list, he should just use that, but ignore any that don’t exist in the 13.2 repo.

Thanks for your feedback and confirmation guys and my apologies for not
responding earlier.

Not good advice since phonon-backend-vlc’ exist in the 13.2 repo
but causes crashes (in Dolphin) as noted earlier in this thread. My
first post also has the 1-click package list for 13.2 Kde.
Thus the good advice is to stick with phonon-backend-gstreamer and
phonon4qt5-backend-gstreamer on 13.2 and DON’T install phonon-backend-vlc and honon4qt5-backend-vlc to replace them.
