I am new to linux so you will have to forgive my ignorance. Basically what I am trying to do is install opensuse from the 11.1 DVD, however my computer of choice has no CD/DVD drive and refuses to boot from a USB CDROM drive.
First off I created a partition of my HDD which I formatted to FAT and used similar instruction from the section on creating a USB stick boot for network install (Installation without CD - openSUSE)
I was then able to boot into Linuxrc v2.1.17, where I was aiming to install from the a USB DVD drive, which is also where I got stuck. In settings > Debug (expert) > Enter Root Image, I changed to point to /boot/i386/loader/initrd, and Installation System to /boot/i386/loader/linux; which started alright, loaded the installation system, immediately after that completes I get “an error occurred during the installation.” message. In the background of the Linuxrc screen there is “udevd-event[1473]: run_grogram: exe” but the beginning is cut off by the Linuxrc GUI. Am I not specifying the correct installation source?
Ultimately I haven’t tried doing a install from HDD which to me would cause me exactly the same grief. As for a network install I haven’t begun to even look into it yet, if this is an simpler path than I am defiantly open to suggestions.
If you can extract your DVD (more or less, you should technically create
an Installation Source officially via another SUSE box’s Yast, but that
may not be required) to a directory and then host that directory structure
via HTTP you could do a network installation fairly easily. Depending on
the computer(s) you have around this could be possible and easy or hard.
You may also be able to copy the DVD contents to a USB stick from which
you can boot. Maybe borrow a DVD drive from family/friend to use in your
system for an hour as well.
Good luck.

Copying the files to a USB stick, I think I would still be stuck where I am because the DVD works to an extent (it doesn’t work at all unless I make the changes in debug) and then falls over.
I will try making an installation source with Yast and installing over the network.
