Linux locks the optical drive. How to avoid this, and just remove it like in Windows!!!!

Of course we do, but you do not understand us.

It is not within our powers to tell you how to make the eject button work
unconditionally. You can, however, request that feature (not here!), or
report the bug, after you understand the problem - which you do not.

Is that clear enough? :slight_smile:

HOWTO: Eject CDROM With The Eject Button - FedoraForum.org

So, I followed the above link as suggested in a previous message here and the instructions say to edit the file /etc/sysctl.conf as root:

kdesu kwrite /etc/sysctl.conf

And add the following two lines at the end of this file:

# Eject CD-ROM By Using the Eject Button
dev.cdrom.lock=0

Then reboot your PC and you will find that the DVD button now works and is no longer locked. I just tried it and the solution does work for me as well. Now, this seems to me to indicate that the behavior is not a bug, but perhaps a change in the default behavior in KDE 4.6.0. If this has changed in yet a newer version of KDE, one should look at the above configuration file to see if this command is there now by default.

Thank You,

Thanks for this! lol!

Can’t thank you enough, works great, and saves me a lot of time.

You are very welcome. I did not create the solution found by someone else, I just recreated it here in an easy to understand format. But the kind words are always appreciated.

Thank You,
