Updated.
No problems to report here!

updated and everything a ok here

Will I need to reinstall nVidia drivers after this update?
If so can I do it from Gnome, or shall I reboot and start again - [pain!]
(openSuSE 11, Intel Duo, 2Gb RAM, nVidia 8800 1Gb)
Thanks for you help,

Maxh

Maybe yes, maybe no. On my test PC (running openSUSE-11.0) with an older MX400 nvidia, I updated to the new kernel with no problem. My webcam (a Phillps) and my PC’s audio, also survived the kernel update from a functionality perspective. As a precaution, before installing the new kernel, I first backed up my PCs /boot/grub/menu.lst file, and then after installing the new kernel (but before rebooting) I checked the modified /boot/grub/menu.lst file to ensure it made sense (which it did). Then I rebooted. I confess I was not worried about breaking the proprietary nVidia drivers, as I know enough how to boot to run level 3, and switch back to an openGL or vesa driver, in case the proprietary driver failed.

If you are worried (and its a good idea to be prudent and careful) then you could first check to see if there are any new drivers out, suitable to the new kernel, and download them such that you can easily access them from run level 3. Maybe print out the appropriate worst case installation instructions in advance (as a precaution), in case you do have problems.

Typically, with such kernel updates, there is a risk of breaking any driver that might be kernel specific … ie for example, one “might” break their:

  • graphics
  • wireless connection
  • audio
  • webcam
    *]virtual software (such as vbox)

Hello,

after installing kernel 2.6.25.16-0.1-default my system crashes 5 to 10 minutes after booting up. This can be reproduced easily.

When I reinstall kernel 2.6.25.9-0.2-default the system works fine again.

The bug could possibly be related to the reiserfs filesystem, cf. attached tracebacks.

(BTW: I use 4 md devices (software raid-1) with reiserfs on each and file-based luks encryption)

System specs: Intel Q6600, nvidia 8800 GTX (with 173.14.12), 4 gb ram, gigabyte 965P-ds3 (rev3.3) mainboard

Here are some tracebacks, more available:

I would suggest you open a bug report and see if the developers can help
you out on this one.

Hello,

thanks for the reply, I will file a bug report.

Hi,

thanks for the very rapid reply.

I did have to recompile the NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-173.14.12-pkg2.run file and reconfigure x.

Very nerve-wracking if you are not used to that sort of thing!

I have never fund the YaST2 method works and have to do this every time a Kernal is updated.

Thanks again,

Max

Hi

After this update my wireless card stopped working… There is no ath_pci module any more only ath5k that is not working for my chipset… yet.

ath5k phy1: Atheros AR5213A chip found (MAC: 0x79, PHY: 0x45)
ath5k phy1: RF2112A 2GHz radio found (0x56)

Thanks

Leszek

If your atheros worked before with a madwifi, you could try to rebuild that driver with the madwifi source.

Please take a look at this thread:
Madwifi-kmp issues With 11.0 - openSUSE Forums

Where I made a suggestion openSUSE Forums - View Single Post - Madwifi-kmp issues With 11.0 the users rebuild their madwifi with:
su
rpmbuild --rebuild /path/to/the-rpm/madwifi-package-name.src.rpm
where “madwifi-package-name.src.rpm” is an arbitrary example, you need to find the real previously function src rpm.

Harryc56 followed that up and proved the idea worked, and provided a more detailed guideline here openSUSE Forums - View Single Post - Madwifi-kmp issues With 11.0

Note in addition to the appropriate .src rpm, you also need the correct kernel-source for the new kernel, and kernel-syms (and of course the appropriate gcc build packages).

Alternatively, you can just wait a week or two, and someone else is bound to build an rpm for you.

I had big problems with this kernel update.

after installing it the initrd was missing and /boot/grub/menu.lst was incomplete (it only had the first 3-4 lines, but was missing the boot options).

i started rescue system and fixed that, but now i still have problems with my mainboard with Intel ICH10. the new module for teh sata driver seems to have problems with the chip now, (before the new kernelupdate all was working).
i still cannot boot the computer now (cannot find root filesystem after initrd), so cannot post any kernel logs.

Hi
It is updated and working well
