I’m desperate trying to find native Linux email client that supports Microsoft Exchange 2007- i.e. alternative to Microsoft Outlook client.
Unfortunately I haven’t succeeded yet.
Company where I’m working in use Microsoft Exchange as corporate email server as many other companies do. Since I want to use Linux at work it is essential to have an ability to work productive with corporate email.
Before my company had updated MS Exchange server from 2003 to 2007 I was able to access my email box using Evolution (via owa plug-in).
However now I couldn’t able to connect to MS Exchange 2007 with any linux email client.
I tried the following options that I googled:
Evolution + Evolution-MAPI plug-in: it fails on authentication stage
According to Novell web site Evolution supports MS Exchange 2007, but in fact it doesn’t. It would be nice if someone who is familiar with SLED can tell whether there is an email client that can connect to MS Exchange 2007 ?
Thunderbird + Exchange Connector plug-in: according to description it supports only Calendar, but even that was not working in my case
Recently I found this project: OpenChange Website It looks like very close to what I need, but I didn’t figure out how to integrate packages from this project with email clients like Evolution/Thunderbird/KMail
The only workaround for linux that really works in my case is - VirtualBox + Windows + MS Office.
I tried to run Outlook on Wine, but it was crashing during email account setup.
I think that it is weired that still there is no solution for this. Because there are a lot of non-Microsoft applications on different platforms that can connect to MS Exchange, for example default email client on my Android cell phone can do it. Mac OS, iOS, Blackberry can do it. Why linux doesn’t?
So that I’m wondering if there is any native Linux email client that support at least basic operations with emails on MS Exchange 2007 server?
Hi
Then you need to report as a bug or raise an SR, these are the openSUSE
forums, if you post over in the SLED or Evolution forum at http://forums.novell.com with some more details of your setup and
evolution logs would be good.
I’m getting the following error in Evolution+MAPI: “Authentication failed. MapiLogonProvider:MAPI_E_LOGON_FAILED”
No more details provided. I don’t know how to get more info to determine what actual problem is.
As malcolmlewis suggests, you are more likely to get an answer to this question from other SUSE enterprise users who have experience of this type of setup. This is the community forum, not the enterprise forum.
Hi, it would be great if Evolution or some derivative thereof supported MS Exchange 5.5 and greater. Will peruse the SUSE enterprise forum…
are there any other known email clients that support MS Exchange? I have read some info on the Brutus plugin, but openSUSE does not have an RPM for it.

you can actually use more or less every mail client capable of using the
imap protocol.
The trick is simply to switch on imap support in the MS-Exchange server.
As expected that extension is not exactly standard compliant, but it works
quite ok. My former company used Exchange as groupware solution (shudder…)
and my colleges and I were at least able to take part in email exchange
without hassle. Works for saily use in a production environment.
A little annoying are how non-personal accounts and addresses are handled in
the MS world. They use all kind of ‘persons’ like “divixion XY” and so in,
there does not seem to be any other posibility. That means you have to use
several passwords.
And of course groupware functions are NOT supported that way.
But you asked for an email client, not a groupware client.
You could use the MS-Exchange web frontend for that, but it is a pain.
