Linux beware: Microsoft acquires Novell, become UNIX copyrig

URL : iTWire - Linux beware: Microsoft acquires Novell, become UNIX copyright owner

In a shock announcement, Microsoft has today taken majority ownership of software house Novell. This immediately gives the Redmond giant control of Novell’s intellectual property assets including the legal copyright over UNIX. Already Red Hat and Canonical (Ubuntu) have expressed their expectation Microsoft will aggressively seek to eradicate all distributions save for Microsoft Linux Vista, formerly SUSE.

April’s fool :stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah, but when I first read that in Google Reader (via TuxMachines) I my heart stopped for the moment.

that’s was the intend of the article, to scare the **** out of you :stuck_out_tongue:

I should sue you for damages from your post. I nearly had a heart attack and died.

Just kidding…

rotfl! microsoft linux vista rotfl!rotfl!rotfl!

Too bad it’s not true. Novell could have gone in and turned MS business
in the right direction.

And with that level of funding, we might have got ALSA fixed…

Nearly fixed anyway. Fixed next release - certainly. We anticipate promising.

Now inclusive would this be anyway? Would it include Solaris, BSD or IBM’s and HP’s unix as well?

Yes, and OS X too since it’s a certified UNIX

Fixed? ALSA is a pile of ****. Linux needs a state of the art sound system and ALSA surely isn’t. Hell, even Windows sound system is superior to ALSA

The bigger news is Microsoft’s acquistion of Red Hat. The OS will
finally integrate well with Windows and will be called MS Hat Enterprise
(in keeping with Microsoft’s fantastic naming convention).

Argghh…

Thats not funny!

Off to lie down in a dark room.

:open_mouth:

Microsoft Linux Vista … thats a pretty catchy name

rotfl! Don`t make these bad jokes… I could loose control… rotfl!

You gals / guys are killing me. Sadly I haven’t had such a good laugh in a long while. Thanks. But every time I hear Novell I shutter thinking about building Novell server software with dozens of floppies. Only was involved with one build for some medical place and that was enough.

Mods, please delete this thread before someone dies because of it.

If Oracle could buy Sun, I don’t see why MS could not buy Novell… Your joke could perfectly become real one day.
Remember that Novell itself bought a small german company, which has been the first european Linux distribution … its name was SuSE.

You think it’ll pass regulations? Keep in mind Novell holds the UNIX copyright, and if it gets transferred to MS while buying Novell, it can get really really nasty. You surely don’t want the UNIX copyrights in the hands of MS

Oracle was never ruled a monopoly…Microsoft was, so the hurdles would
be pretty significant.

Don’t forget that for a merger or acquisition, in the US the FTC gets
involved, and in the EU, the EU Commission gets involved. Without those
two organizations’ approvals (along with the shareholders of both
companies), a merger/acquisition wouldn’t happen.

There’ve been rumours of Novell being acquired by several companies for
more than 20 years. One real inhibitor has been Novell’s cash-on-hand
has been quite high.
