Anyone know what happened to Lightscribe? I have a couple of IDE drives I can’t use any more since changing computers. I was able to find one drive that supported Lightscribe, but I can’t find reference to any more. I still have a small stack of disks, but they’re dwindling. The latest software is but a shadow of what it was. HP seems to have taken it over, and it looks like they’re going to let it die.

Ah! Didn’t consider that. I know I don’t like the hand lettered CD’s, if you saw my handwriting, you’d know why. I tried the stick on labels with disastrous results. I bought a printer that would handle printable disks. Not too bad, but the linux drivers didn’t work too well, and if you get the slightest water on a disk, the label is gone. LightScribe seemed the answer.
I have a habit of making a copy of any audio disk I purchase for use in my vehicles. If they get trashed, no big deal, I make another. I like CDs and DVDs for loading a bunch of pictures or video clips on and sending to friends and family. They can view them using their DVD player connected to the TV. The disks stay in a jewel case and don’t get lost like a USB drive would. It’s easy to tell what’s on them by the label.
Me too… But they are too small for many of my uses. Blue ray are
(still?) overtly expensive, and anyway, the player is not really
supported in Linux (movies in blue ray). And I don’t have a big telly to
really see the difference. So, no, I haven’t tried blue ray for data either.
I’m using flash sticks for exchanges, with a paper label on a string. I
bought a box of those labels
I very seldom use lightscribe because I feel it is not supported in
Linux. This desktop doesn’t have Windows, and I refuse to use the laptop
unit unless on emergencies (replacements are expensive).
But I liked the idea. Contrast is low, though.

Uh, I use LightScribe all of the time. This whole thread is (no offense)
nonsense to me. I use it from openSUSE… and my drives are all SATA.
(confused?)
I can send screenshots if you like (running on openSUSE 12.3, but I’ve been
using it since 11.x, maybe earlier).
Yes! I’d love screenshots.
The version I used in openSuse 11.3 allowed me to use graphic images in the burned label. With the advent of 12.x, I find the software limited to some predefined circular graphics like footprints and only a simple title. I would love to have the functionality of the version available in openSues11.3 available in openSuse 12.3. Can you tell me how to do this? How to install in in the current (12.3) version of openSuse? You’ll have my undying gratitude!

I’m willing to try it, if I learn how. I have a box of such DVDs somewhere.
