I don’t need many of them but it seems to be impossible to get rid of them while
patterns-kde-kde_plasma
installed.
I have seen notes about
patterns-openSUSE-plasma5_basis
on the web but it seems to depreciated now.

Looking for any ideas how to remove unwanted KDE packages and do not ever let them come back after updates/upgrades (I tried --no-recommends too)
Please do not complain if certain parts of the integrated experience KDE is supposed to be are not going to work as expected. KDE / Plasma 5 is a desktop environment where all apps "can talk to eachother.
But, having said that, you need to remove the concerning patterns packages. These are basically empty packages, just there to take care of deps/recommends. Next, remove the applications you don’t want and lock them with zypper:
Thank you for your reply. Sorry I did not want to sound like I am complaining. Just trying the remove akregator, kmail, etc.
kmail amd akonadi are the ones that cause the issue. I don’t use a local email client and if I accidentally clicked somewhere on a mailto: link KMail pops up and starts akonadi-server that is a memory hog. I got tired of stopping the service manually all the time and looking for a way to avoid doing this.
As a side note even KDE Neon which is their official “set of packages” comes without kmail, akonadi, etc.
It’s not official in any way. Neon is as independent from other KDE projects as openSUSE is. Just that it has the name “KDE Neon” does not mean anything.
It’s just an unfortunate (but deliberate!) naming decision.
Although the underlying subsystem should generally be a gnome base, surprisingly that doesn’t seem to be always enforced today, and on openSUSE LXDE and LXQt are themed to have a general User feel somewhat similar to KDE (but much more lightweight).
I removed kmail and akonadi long time ago, because I have no use for it, just like libreoffice and KDE games, etc. I have done this since many opensuse realeases and also did it in Tumbleweed. So far no issue, but make sure you have a solid and working back-up system before you try it out.
Just wanted to update here that I did remove the patterns as well as unwanted apps such as Akonadi, kde-pim, plasma update, etc.
So far so good. System working well, battery lasts forever, CPU staying cool (unless I do some ffmpeg encoding).
The packages do not come back after upgrades as long as I keep the --no-recommends option.
Thank you for your help here!
Could anyone mark the thread as [Solution discovered] please (I can’t do that for some reason)
