Since Lifehacker is read by broad spectrum of PC enthusiasts who aren’t
necessarily Linux users, this is a chance to push openSUSE awareness up
a bit in the non-Linux space. If you’re so inclined, go vote!
i am very happy to see that each person can vote only one time (i checked and
learned that you can click the vote button as much as you want to, but the vote
count won’t change, after the first vote…)
Oh No! i was experimenting and learned it is possible to vote more than
once: because the vote count increased the FIRST time i voted using Firefox,
Opera, Konqueror and IEs4Linux…
hmmmm, i guess i should email them and have those extra three votes for openSUSE
removed…
no wait, i wonder if i purge all those browser’s cookies, the page would then
incorrectly count four MORE votes…i guess i better wait because i might have
to ask them to remove all SEVEN extra votes…
good thing we don’t know a hacker who could put together a script which would
vote for openSUSE then dump the cookie and vote again and repeat repeat repeat etc…
i heard a story once that some evil doer on the Redmond Campus did such back
when there were “Browser Wars” between IBMs OS/2’s broswer, Netscape, and IE…
really i did hear about that, or maybe it was a Warped hacker, i don’t recall
now

I hope I can explain this to you with my own personal experience. I had one leaked through virus to many a piece of spyware despite having 2 apps that were supposed to keep it from happening. I’d had it with Windows! I almost threw out my PC then I read about linux,& decided to give it a try.
In my case Ubuntu was a 2nd choice after Suse 10.0. As hard as I tried, & despite all the well meaning help I got from the forums of then I could not get the screen resolution I wanted. I had suse10.0 for about 3 weeks & left for Ubuntu. Now once there I got the screen res I wanted. Overall Ubuntu just worked! Now,Rich for most that come in from Windows that’s all they want. Initially in my case that’s all I wanted. I just wanted to get away from needing AV’s worries over spyware etc. What I got was something that didn’t have those problems, yet permitted me to do the basics & was highly customizable. As I said for most that’s all & once you got something that works most people will stick with it. Then Ubuntu becomes what they know, thusly becoming comfortable staying with it. At the same time more are coming in Ubuntu’s numbers go up further then it becomes NUMBER 1! It becomes popular.
I hope that explains it to you.
Hey thanks, thats an interesting explanation to it. I came from windows too! I first went for Mandriva then OpenSuse, then I noticed how popular Ubuntu was so I thought I would give it a try. For many reasons I went back to OpenSuse. Stuck with it now. I’m just surprised at the huge division between the thousands and hundreds.
Though I must say, I don’t think I have ever come across an operating system that “just works”. Some work better than others though… Not every distro works the way we want them to without a bit of intelligent interference. (my opinion)
I guess people just follow their gut feelings
There might be a lot of people out there who enjoy both! rotfl!
I started with Mandrake from a couple admins from my school. I liked it, easy to use. Then I talked to a couple other admins from my father’s company. They were actually using SuSE in the environment and I looked into it. I found it was highly customizable and ready for use in just about any way from small servers to desktops.
From then on I am stuck. I have looked at Red Hat/Fedora and Ubuntu. I don’t like gnome. I also missed the package selections you get with SuSE, something you don’t get as much with Kbuntu either off a DVD.
I like the last category, “It changes so often…” made me laugh and made me stop and think just why I use this or that distro.
I use it purely for freedom of choice. Sure we all struggle with this or that feature not working, drivers that are next to impossible to configure, video that’s even harder.
But look @ the M$ mentality that still exists. The hardware companies just make more money from and cater to the M$ systems, which is still 1 of the top OS’s in the market share. But I still hate it.
Yes, it’s changing, but change is slow in the battle of the OS’s.
How many can say they’ve ever bought a system package or a laptop that did not contain and existing M$ OS installed??
I just bought a new Toshiba LT and sure enough I have Windows Vista now, so off I go to repart. the drive and triple boot with Ubuntu, and OpenSUSE.
So freedom of choice is maintained for me.
Also notice how many flavors or distros that are missing from the list that are just as good as OpenSUSE, Ubuntu, Fedora, etc.
Too many to list here and even more with LiveCD’s to get your Linux feet wet.
Asking why everyone uses a certain distro above another, hasn’t been truly bitten by the Linux bug yet.
I like experimenting with new distros, resolving issues, searching google for help and that keeps my interest peeked almost continuously with Linux.
I won’t vote, sorry, because I think it’s wrong to advocate distros using a popularity contest as the measure.
I think the measure of a distro is how well it responds to serious issues - to my mind learning from the ZMD package management disaster of SUSE Linux 10.1 has made openSUSE much better, for example. Along the same lines, I’ve just seen how well SLES 10 SP2 has improved the 10.1 experience, and I’m impressed.
I wish Ubuntu well, but the zealots should remember that pride comes before a fall.
I used to use Kubuntu before moving to Opensuse. Not trying to bash Ubuntu, but Opensuse is the best Linux OS IMHO. If they would break down all of the Ubuntu children as seperate votes, it would be a lower percentage. I’ve often wondered why there aren’t more Opensuse children like Debian has. After using Debian and Opensuse both, I’ve discovered that the “guts” of Opensuse are a little more complex than Debian. Could that be a reason?
