Libreoffice Writer Paragrapgh Numbering

When numbering paragraphs, all sub-levels always start on a new line by default. Does anyone know how to position paragraph sub-levels on the same line as the previous level , ie

  1. (a) i. Paragraph text…

Instead of

  1. (a)
    i. Paragraph text…

I’m using OpenSUSE 12.3 with LibreOffice 3.6
Thanks.

Sorry, the last post didn’t display properly, the example should have been displayed as:

. 1. (a) i. Paragraph text…

Instead of

. 1.
. (a)
. i. Paragraph text…

I’d like the sub-levels on the same line instead of stepping down in a hierarchical manner. Hope someone can help with this.

Thanks

AFAIK you cannot do this by using any of the built-in features because they assign a single numbering style to each paragraph and assume that a change of style means a fresh paragraph. This is actually good typesetting practice and, as a copyeditor, I would be advising you to simpify your arguments to reduce the number of levels anyway.

However, having used similar non-standard systems in the past before word-processors acquired all these specialised features, I would recommend creating a hanging indent and entering your non-standard style of numbering by hand. Unfortunately, LibreOffice may try to put you right; in which case, use Ctl-Z to restore your preferred style.

If you are talking about headings, this may help. Go into Tools/Outline Numbering and select the Numbering tab. There is a field “Show sublevels” which controls how many “level numbers” appear on each heading. If you set the sublevels to the same number as the heading (for example, 3 and 3) then the third level heading will start with something like I.A.3. If you set it to 1, then the third subhead will start with only 3.

You can do this via Format>Bullets and Numbering>Options>Show sublevels>3
