Some, but plugins seem generally to be compatible between the two.
LibreOffice is the preferred of the two in the openSUSE project.

when i had some trouble with libreoffice opening some of the latest M$
word files, i installed openoffice in addition to LO. they don’t ‘bite’
each other, run in parallel, using different names for their libraries,
but i didn’t find any difference between the two for what i’m doing, or
was trying to do. (i’m not a “power user” of any office app., so there may

Well, first of all, there is a significant licensing difference, now that OpenOffice.org went to the Apache foundation. Even though I believe the Apache foundation has provided a lot to open source software, I think the Copyleft approach of LibreOffice is a better guarantee for the future. Particularly if one considers what happened the first months after Oracle bought Sun and lost interest in OpenOffice.org.
With regard to features and stability, in my experience the 3.3.x branch of Libreoffice (from 3.3.3. onwards) is more stable than OpenOffice 3.3., while the 3.4.x branch has added a lot of nice feature with regard e.g. to datapilot/pivot tables in Calc and Greek numbering to writer (probably not that important to you), but is not yet as stable as the 3.3 branch.
The time based release schedule means that .0 versions should probably always taken with care in LibreOffice.
Generally I have often (and I know it is rather daring to say this on an OpenSuse forum), experienced that installing the Office application from the projects web site (that would be Home for libreoffice) provides a more stable, but not as beautiful experience as installing from the repositories. Fortunately, you can have both, the distro and the plain vanilla versions installed in parallel.
