It was mentioned upgrading to alsa 1.0.18a fixed the problem. Seems like a simple fix. How hard would this be to do? Is there a Suse repository I could use to upgrade (and all the potential dependencies) ?

The 1.0.19 git has the alsa 1.0.18a updates inside.

However Ubuntu are notorious for implementing their own fixes and either not submitting them upstream, or simply passing them to debian (where they may or may not make it upstream). Ubuntu consider “debian” to be upstream, which is IMHO a loose use of the upstream definition.
