Legacy ati on 13.2 xorg?

Ok I should be able to figure this out on my own… But ( there is always a
but  )

I have tried various permutations of xorg with the new 13.2 but cannot get
get my laptop ( OK it is a few years old circa 2007, Samsung R60 plus ATI
1250) and cannot get it to work.

Also have 13.1 on anoter HD and tried updating it to the latest xorg +
kernel and radeon module and the same happens:

KDE will start with composition but any notification or pop up crashes to
desktop but then can be restarted ( that I can understand and thought was a
QT bug ) but being an old f**t I do like my minecraft

Minecraft will not even start even though I have the latest Oracle ( spit! )
I have it working on 13.1 with the normal ( with updates ) Xorg and kernel
and it runs fine.

So my question is: Is there any chance of this old laptop being able to play
on 13.2 or should I stick with 13.1?

I’m not sure if this is helpful.

I have an older 32-bit computer with ATI graphics. The computer is a Toshiba Satellite from 2004.

It is working pretty well with 13.2 Beta1, but with some provisos.

Firstly, it is slow - but that’s due to a slow processor.

Secondly, I turned off Desktop Effects in KDE. I don’t remember whether they worked at all.

Thirdly, if I use the default settings, all is fine until I leave the computer unattended. When I come back to it, and move the mouse, the screen appears and the brightness indicator shows it going to full brightness. Then it goes dark, and rebooting (which I have to do blindly) is the only way to get it back. I solved this by changing the power settings to never dim the screen. Turning off the screen is okay. It seems to be that restoring full brightness after dimming is what triggers this bug. And I have not reported the bug, mostly because the machine is so old.

Hi nrickert,

Well did a complete re-install of original beta Opensuse kde ( live KDE
version ) again on an empty drive, just done an update to presumably RC1
not had time to look yet but the desktop seems a lot more stable even with
effects switched on on this poor old ati xpress 1250 laptop.

Next job will to try to install Oracle Java ( again I spit but Minecraft
needs it I suppose ).

However what with work and all I have not got the time tonight will have a
go tomorrow.

Unfortunately my broadband here is a little bit slow so it all takes time
 Gosh I don`t know how I used to get on on a 56k modem ha ha ha!!!*

  • never take anyone seriously who use multiple exclamation marks and
    overdoes the smilies

Cheers
