Leap Login Keyboard layout (still / again)

I have a rather fresh 42.1 installation with Gnome (+classic) and Mate and just realized that the login keyboard layout is english US although I switched to french keyboard in the installation process. Konsole mode on Ctrl+Alt+F1 is french. System language is set to english UK, on LockSceen it is french, in Yast it is french, only and only on login it is US…what’s that about?
I found https://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/509674-Login-GDM-keyboard-layout/page2 this discussion but for sharkoxi the problem solves magically by updating from 13.2 to 42.1
(everything I found up to know is set to fr and I do not have ibus-setup)

I strongly believe that using a password that does not contain qazy or any special characters cannot be the solution.

Any insights on this?

As mentioned in the forum thread you linked to, GDM has its own keyboard layout settings. Try to change those.
GNOME’s settings (gnome-control-center)->Region & Language->Login Screen (at the top-right of the window)

If that doesn’t help, I’d suggest trying a different displaymanager/login screen, e.g. lightdm, sddm, or kdm.
You need to install one first and then set it in /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager.

Or try xdm which is installed by default, it’s rather basic but would at least show whether it’s a gdm problem or rather system-wide.

Hi…first my apologies for not reading the linked article carefully enough.
There are two things to say:

  1. it actually seems to work now, so thanks for making me see what was directly in front of me.
  2. if I make a fresh installation and change to French keyboard, but the resulting login screen is assuming English, how would one call this? Redmond would probably call it a feature; I am not so sure, though.

Cheers.

Good.

If you set a French keyboard during installation, the login screen should have a French keyboard as well.
If not, I’d call it a bug.

Most DMs do not set the layout themselves, but use the system keyboard layout (set in YaST).
GDM is “special”, as it has its own keyboard layout settings.
If you change the system layout, it probably has no effect on GDM therefore.

I’d say this can at least be “unexpected”. But apparently it’s how the GNOME developers designed it.

Personally I only use kdm, so I have no problem with this… Although, I’m not really changing the keyboard layout often either (or at all).
