I just upgraded from 42.1 to 42.2. I am probably missing something here, but there seems to be no way to close certain applications. I found that in Dolphin, I can show the bar that lets me close dolphin, however, if I run YaST, there seems to be no way for me to access anything that lets me close it once I am through.
Furthermore, I cannot even move an application, and I also seem to be blocked from bringing another application to the foreground.
I downloaded the iso from opensuse.org, burned a DVD, and allowed the upgrade to connect to the internet. I let the upgrade proceed from there without changing settings and downloading the most recent packages as necessary.
My video card is an AMD Athlon 5350 APU which was working correctly prior to the update. I do not recall installing a driver for it on 42.1, though I might be mistaken about that.
Just for clarification: you write you cannot “close certain applications”.
Which applications exactly?
I somehow have the impression that you actually mean the titlebar is missing (which would likely be on all applications then), that allows you to move or close windows, right?
Your problem sounds to me to be that kwin crashed or didn’t start.
Try to press Alt+F2, that should give you a krunner window.
Please run “konsole” there (or via the application menu if still accessible), and run this inside:
kwin_x11 --replace
Do the titlebars show up then?
If not, do you get an error message? (please post it if yes)
Have you done the upgrade using only the official repositories? It’s recommended to disable all the external repos before doing the system upgrade.
You also should have changed the URLs of repositories from 42.1 to 42.2 with the system running before booting into the DVD, or it mixes packages from both and causes great instability.
If the current KDE focus is an application’s window, does typing <Ctrl+Q> close the application’s window?
Does this issue also occur with a new “fresh” test user?
With the user “root”, does “rpm --verify --all” (you will need to either redirect the output to a file or, pipe the output to “less”) indicate any missing files or other system issues?
Were you running KDE4 on the Leap 42.1 system?
Is the KDE running on the Leap 42.2 system Plasma5?
Yes, the title bars were gone on all apps, such as YaST, settings, etc.
However, the problem appears to have corrected itself. I don’t understand this as I rebooted the other day, and title bars were not there then. I have not updated since the upgrade, so it seems highly unlikely that the fact that it is resolved today was as a result of an update.
Perhaps kwin did crash or did not start; however, I just did a ps -ef | grep kwin and it is running.
I don’t know what happened, but the problem appears to be gone.
Yes, I did the upgrade with only the official repositories, and the upgrade, on running from the DVD, changed the URLs for all the repositories from 42.1 to 42.2.
Thanks again, all. Sorry about my “panic mode.” :embarrassed:
