I just installed openleapr 42.1 on a noteook in order to test it. While trying to diagnose a problem with the system - it switches off after a while - after some minutes being
unactive - i encounter some issues. The system fails into a shootdown. The systems sometimes falls into a “freeze”
so i have to look at the logfiles
How do I open or view log files on Linux operating systems?
journalctl
this does not work either
To see /var/log/messagess log file, we can enter:
tail -f /var/log/messagess
less /var/log/messagess
more /var/log/messagess
i get the following

what causes the issue with the shootdown… what should i do to fix this?
A power off crash may well be hardware related - heat/dust etc.
An automatic shutdown is likely to be something else. Is it a shutdown or a ‘sleep’ caused by say a screen saver timer ?
regarding the logfile: we can also see some errors in the logs that might be worth taking at a look at regardless.
First, why are some of the lines in the wrong time sequence ?
See here:

**question; **What causes the jump back in time ?
Also:
systemd[1]: Cannot add dependency job for unit logrotate.timer, ignoring: Unit logrotate.timer failed to load: No such file or directory.
ATTENTION: i might have modified /etc/resolv.conf. Leaving it untouched
i need to have an overview on all the changes - should i check the repositories and such …?
Put a CPU temp widget on desk top and monitor if the temp keeps going up you have a temp problem. Simple CPU monitor is a good one I use should be in the add widget stuff
I don’t know what using another Linux would do if it is a hardware problem
**conclusion: **it is a new laptop. i guess it runs UEFI bios and by default in “secure” mode.
i am not sure if it is able to run opensuse linux without any issues.
Guess that i need to boot into the bios, and change the boot mode to “legacy” or something like that to disable the “secure” features.
Some newer Linux systems can be installed on a secure boot UEFI bios, but not all.
Secure boot would not be a problem and it can be simply turned off. Legacy/EFI deal with how things are meant to boot and that is decided at the time you install and can not be arbitrarily changed.
In any case none of that would effect “no reason” shut downs. Over heating of the cpu can cause that . Is there an NVIDIA card/chip involved. if so that would make it an Optimus based lap top ?? If so special drivers may be needed or at least procedures
Anyway Plasma 5 seems to have many problems just read the recent threads. But this is the first I have seen anyone say that it shuts down usually the thing freezes
many thanks for the thougths and the ideas that you share with us… - this is a **new notebook -HP Notebook hp 14 r 103ng - **running OpenSuse Leap 42.1

Well i guess that i firstly would
install a new BIOS - what do you suggest - do you think that a new BIOS woluld be a good idea…??
then i will have a closer look at the things…
guess - and admit your hints: Secure 1boot would not be a problem and it can be simply turned off.
Legacy/EFI deals with how things are meant to boot and that is decided at the time of the install and can not be arbitrarily changed.
In any case none of that would effect “no reason” shut downs…
