Leap 42.1 network problem

I’m looking for help with network connections. I have a new desktop build:
asus h170 pro gaming mb, 32gb mem, i56500 intel cpu
integrated intel ethernet controller
added tplink gigabit pcie network adapter tg-3468 after no connection results

the pc is plugged into a netgear wndr 3300 dual hub a/b/g/n by cable. This router is about 4-5 years old and has been working fine with other computers by cable and by wifi. It serves 2 laptops by wifi and my laptop always plugged in by cable, 2 smartphones, and 2 roku devices. It has been trustable. It is plugged into a arris sb6141 cable modem which has been working flawlessly since i got it earlier this year. I installed 2 new out of the pckg cat 7 cables between the modem, router and pc. These cables were tested when I had connection problems so I know they work.

So this router is serving a desktop, 3 laptops, 2 smartphones, and 2 rokus. I first tried installing leap 42.1 but was unsuccessful so i installed 13.1 since I had a burned disk nearby. 13.1 installed easily as many times before but would not connect to the network. I backed out of install, checked everything again but it would not connect to the network. After install, I checked network settings and everything looked ok as far as i can tell. My other devices were ok so i plugged the pc directly into the modem and like times before it worked. I was connected long enough to check 3 speed tests on different sites and each said i was getting over 140Mbps. My modem supposedly supports up to 270Mbps so that didn’t concern me. 13.1 was online long enough (maybe 2-3 min) to detect updates and tried to install them. But I lost connection and couldn’t get it back. After checking everything else I knew I finally called cableone.net. They said they see the modem and the router. Then they went thru the routine of restarting and using only the modem, things I had already done. They helped me make sure settings were right for the ip adress, subnet mask, gateway, dns server, etc. I had them right anyway. They didn’t do anything that made a difference except to say they could turn it over to a pro. Not a financial option for me.

I added the tplink adapter because I found many people online that had it work for them. The realtek chip is supposed to work well with linux, and I have the r8169 driver installed and active. Firefox won’t connect nor can I ping anyone, other than the loopback adapter 127.0.0.1. Pinging cableone.net or anyone else returns unknown host so I have checked the dns server and I’m using google 8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4 - still no good. Ifup and network manager say I’m connected but I’m not. Ifup says the tplink adapter is configured. The integrated intel network controller is not configured - 13.1 nor leap even see it. and by the way, after installing leap 42.1 successfully after all this occurred, is reported as 13.1 with a second download and burn after the first one failed. Why would leap 42.1 be identified as 13.1?

So here I am with a new computer that seems to work fine except for no connection to the internet. Could you please help. I’ve tried everything I know and more from reading the forums but to no effect.

Thank you for your help

Other than the lack of network, congrats on the new box. If we are unable
to fix it, you could send it to me and I’ll throw it away for you.

Does your router have a web interface? Does it see your new computer, and
if so show its IP address, etc.?

Can one of these many other devices ping your new box by IP address? I
presume your new box has an IP address, but that information is missing so
please run the following commands and provide their output here:

ip addr
ip r
ip -s link
grep -v -e '^#' /etc/resolv.conf
grep -v -e '^#' /etc/hosts

How, exactly, were you unsuccessful? Did not boot to install media? Did
not complete install? Completed but system would not boot?

It may be good to know how you verify that something will not connect to
the network. Do lights flash on the NIC on the computer and router sides
when you plug in the cable? Does the Network Manager icon change on the
desktop? Anything in /var/log/messages about networking being setup via DHCP?

This sounds like your 13.1 system lost connection when going through the
modem directly, after having the connection, doing the speed test, and at
least seeing there were updates to be downloaded. Odd that it worked
right up until it suddenly stopped at some level. If that understanding
is incorrect and instead your 13.1 system was not connected through the
router (where it previously could not connect) please clarify.

You are not even able to ping your gateway? When you try and it doesn’t
work, what output do you get back to the screen?

Where do you see it reported as 13.1, exactly?

Good luck.

Hi
I switched ethernet to the r8168 driver from r6169 driver with my
Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit
Ethernet Controller.

Grab a src rpm and rebuild locally;
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/MasterPatricko/openSUSE_Factory/src/r8168-8.040.00-6.25.src.rpm

Wireless, it’s a question of the router capabilities and I’m guessing
your wireless card is a 1x1? If so, unless you can set the router
bandwidth to 40MHz and sideband to upper channel, then a 1x1 wireless
nick will run at half speed. This info was pointed out by forum user
lwfinger who is a wireless kernel developer…

I have a Motorola/Arris SBG6580 cable modem, once configured that my
1x1 systems came up to full speed.

That is a long story and it is a bit difficult to pick the relevant pieces out of it. But please remind that this is a computer help forum. Thus we need not only your conclusions (which may be wrong or right), but predominantly we need computer facts. Thus you do not (only) say that “ifup says …”, but you copy/paste what ifup says into the post. This to assure that we see what you see and did.

Example:

henk@boven:~> su - -c 'ip addr'
Wachtwoord:
1: lo: <LOOPBACK,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 65536 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN
    link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00

So please post your

su - -c 'ip addr'

and

su - -c 'ip route'

and to check your DNS config

host forum.opensuse.org

PS, as you are new here:
Please use CODE tags around copied/pasted computer text in a post. It is the # button in the tool bar of the post editor. When applicable copy/paste complete, that is including the prompt, the command, the output and the next prompt.

So you are running Leap 42.1 where realtek r8169 is not working but working on the first try going to the net.
I think there was a bug in the new kernel regarding and the work-around is to set your MTU to something like 4000
way higher than it should be but it works.

So this is the output from the first request. My tplink adapter is enp2s0 avahi, found also in kinfocenter. It says the ip address is 169.254.8.142, but can that be right? Behind dhcp shouldn’t it be 192.168.x.x? Kinfocenter also says that it’s state is UP. Pinging this address from the new desktop gives 0 packet loss, but pinging from my laptop (plugged into router by cable) gives 100% loss.

I want to tackle this a little at a time. I've had 2 computers quit on me and I'm using an old toshiba laptop I've had for years with 13.1 on it. It is very slow and the display is getting dim. Also I don't have the expertise you guys have. From these 4 replies I'm familiar with maybe 50-75% of the details. I can maintain a computer ok but I'm just learning networking and it kicks my butt. Also since I can't get the desktop online I'm having to copy everything taken from it onto a flash drive and copying it over.
tony@linux-28eo:~> uname -r3.11.6-4-desktop
tony@linux-28eo:~>

Isn’t this the kernel for 13.1? And the kernel for leap 42.1 should be 4.x?

I woould click on the star but there is not one displayed.

ADDED:

I opened chromium this morning and it went online which was unexpected. The computer had been off all night. A speed t est confirmed it was online. Since it had been trying to install over 300 updates but not going online I added the packman repository and switched all others to it. I did some exploring and I could open the config pages of the router and modem, ping them, and ping my isp cableone.net. Everything seemed to be working ok so I decided to restart. Upon restart it would not go back online so I was checking everything again but found nothing wrong. I plugged straight into the modem but no good so I turned it off and let it sit for awhile. I restarted it and it came up online. Baffling. I decided to traceroute cableone.net to check for delays. This is what I got:

I have found others using the tplink lan card blamed the driver r8169 for the problem. But I on this new computer with the same setting I told yesterday and the driver is still r8169 if anyone is curious.

Hello: I’m posting here rather than starting a new thread, which may well be redundant. Do Netgear routers need a special Linux driver?

I have a HP Pavilion DV8000 and a Netgear WNDR4500. I have installed the Broadcom b43 firmware as described in the sticky how-to. When I press the wifi switch the blue light turns on, and it appears the hardware is working.

I only need at this point to connect to a HP printer/scanner, which has detected the Netgear router. The printer configuration does not show a wireless printer. Googling brought up mention of a Linux driver for the Netgear WNDR4500 at linux-drivers.net, but the supposed link does not download anything; it just starts the website driver search all over again. So, do Netgear routers need some sort of driver, and if so, where can I find it? The other question is, are there other routers out there that work with OpenSuSE 13.1 without some special driver support?

It is best to start your own thread to match your specific issue. You need help with HP network printer configuration, so the descriptive title should reflect that. BTW, the firewall could well be at play here.

No.

I posted here because I thought the OP’s problem may relate to the mysterious Netgear Linux driver.

No.
Thanks. The printer works fine via a USB cable, so print configuration is OK.

The router doesn’t care what device or OS is employed, only that correct network configuration is applied so that IP packets can be forwarded/routed. Your post only mentions having problems with detecting the network-attached printer.

Yes, but you mentioned you want to be able to print with the printer connected to the network. The printer URI (as defined in /etc/cups/printers.conf) needs to reflect this. For HP printers using HPLIP drivers, the ‘hp-setup’ utility can take care of this. For models using open source drivers, YaST or the CUPS configuration tools can take care of the necessary. Network printer detection may need the firewall stopped temporarily, or the appropriate ports open.

That is my problem.

That part of the problem is solved. I connected the router to the laptop with an ethernet cable. I was then able to bring up the Netgear browser app. There I found the long alphanumeric pass phrase string. With this I was able to configure HPLIP. (Note for clarification: the password provided in the Netgear router documentation is not what is needed to complete the HPLIP setup.) I then succeeded in sending a wireless test print. However, I still cannot print via a text editor or word processor, so the problem is between the router and the laptop’s network interfaces.
