I have this problem each time i upgrade so here we go again. I have a somehow responding machine in which I have some windows open and I can ctrl-tab between them. After upgrade to 42.1 from 13.2 version - working with multiple monitors(2) was not working.
I changed this setting for Display Monitors via Settings->Configure Desktop->right click Edit Application to run systemsetting5 (replacing systemsettings + some params I don’t recall) and I was able to see the other monitor.
The screen was flickering a lot and i thought that installing the nvidia drivers will fix it.
The problem might be that initially I tried to install the driver directly from NVIDIA(./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-340.101.run) for my card which I was not able to run it because i was trying to run it from a console. At that point I tried to install the Nvidia card driver with - One click for Geforce 400 series and later - and after reboot I got KDE crashing from which i cannot get out. I tried the other versions of NVIDIA drivers being unable to assess in which one my card would fit being quite old, but no luck.
It’s probably the nouveau that it worked with flickering after upgrade, but nvidia driver would work better. I have a GeForce 210 card for which I tried all the 3 drivers packages w/o success.
there is no /etc/X11/xorg.conf file which should be removed and I tried zypper inr; zypper clean -a and zyper ref .
Something is still incorrect and don’t know how to correct it(probably nouveau conflict)?
i added few more for debug purposes to be able to send a detailed report in case this is persistent and I cannot get any help. now looking at it i’m not sure if repo-update should be enabled or why it is enabled. please let me know what else might hep in debugging.
Also if you could recommend a video card which is less problematic with openSuse which has multiple outputs I would appreciate it as I think this one is close to retirement from Nvidia driver point of view and my sanity.
Thank you for your help.
I tried to uninstall nouveau hoping that the drivers i had last installed(G04) will be good for my card. That didn’t give me an X window. Then I removed the nvidia drivers and reinstalled nouveau and accelerated drivers for nouveau and now everything works fine. no flickering. I still have an issue with multiple monitors but i will read more about it and opened a new post if needed.
What exactly is the issue you have with multiple monitors ??
What is the entire output you have for:
sbin/lspci -nnk | egrep 'VGA|3D|Display' -A3
It would also help if you post to susepaste the contents of your xorg log (found in either /var/log or ~/.local/share/xorg ) and then provide a link to that
[As an aside, you’ve got a boat load of repos now, most of which are not needed … i.e. get rid of the debug repos you added]
please let me know if there is anything else needed. Thanks. Please note as per another post hat I have a working desktop for now but with nouveau driver.
Yep, you most certainly do – the lspci output about the kernel driver is as should be expected and I skimmed through your xorg log and it too looks fine
please let me know if there is anything else needed
Well, I’m still not clear on what your current issue with the setup is i.e.:
What exactly is the issue you have with multiple monitors
Meaning, I read through your above (horror storyrotfl!), but I don’t see what the issue is currently … i.e. what is going on with the second monitor with the nouveau driver stack now completely and cleanly in place
well at that time I thought that I’m fine but maybe you would spot something which is incorrect. I locked the machine and left and when I came home the kde crashed meanwhile and I’m now in a partial X window. The apps which were running prior to crash are still running but I don’t have any kde menu and the taskbar disappeared. i will logout and hope to get it back. if not I will be back to me nightmare.
KDE started again after logging out/in. When rebooting the splash screen is always metallic grey and an xconsole starts up and i enter the name and password. the xconsole remains active and it says Console log for mycomputer name.
I changed the Login Screen in System Settings to be an eye candy screen, but even a reboot didn’t change it. Is it because I don’t have plasma? I noticed that it asked me to authenticate before saving it. Is that normal? small kde things which are not that important, but KDE crashing is a problem and not sure where to look. thanks
This bug report (amongst a few others) will also be of interest and provides an in-depth discussion about the nouveau driver issues (for some NVIDIA hadrware)… https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1005323
Thank you deano_ferrari. I followed all the links and tried to understand what to do and meanwhile I was looking for a radeon video card. I found a good one relatively cheap and that was the easy way out of this problem. I have a stable kde environment with plasma and all kinds of widgets working just fine for me now. Thank you everyone for their help and support.
