Leap 16 USB Flash/DVD unable to access graphic mode

Can still install 15.6 on another partition without issue. But the new Leap 16 Full or network online installer images (agama issue?) are impossible.

Have a dual boot setup with LVM for my openSUSE.
Installed Debian 13 and openSUSE 15.6 Leap on other partitions with no problem

Any support most welcome

Is this a Nvidia system? Did you try with nomodeset kernel option?

Thanks. Yes i had discounted that as it must be well over a decade since I last had to add the nomodeset option. I’ll now try it and report back.

When installed I now use the open source nouveau but I suppose the usb iso doesn’t know that. Although Nvidia have dropped support for my card anyway.

nomodeset not recognised as a command by grub-core (I’d forgotten all about how to add the option) and the grubline was sparse, so I put it in the wrong place!

The new agama installer is so complex, and confusing, potentially destructive in some aspects though it own’t let me install to an existing root partition.

Also missing is the option iirc to upgrade or effectively repair a system in graphical mode. I don’t know yet how to use the rescue system but I should try zypper to verify etc
But all this should be in another post, so I will put one up!
Thanks for your pointer to get the usb iso working :+1:

For others who might stumble on this I add the SDB I looked up
SDB:nomodeset

Did you ask Agama for a graphical desktop? By default you don’t get one unless you ask.

Don’t really understand.
When you boot from usb installer it tries to run in graphical mode like all distro usb installers (except maybe the server only ones), agama or calimares or whatever.
Hui’s tip to focus on nomodeset was the correct one. See openSUSE SDB above.

@smudge there is something wrong with the installer for users with Nvidia gpu’s hence the need for nomodeset as a work around until either the open or proprietary module is installed…

Thanks for the bugzilla reference. I understood there was something wrong, and it’s good to know it’s been posted to bugzilla.

For background, not knowing about nomodeset workaround I had very successfully upgraded my existing system via the system-migration-tool, but didn’t like tiny custom login that it installed .
So I tried lightdm and then found myself in all sort of difficulties getting back to gdm (for screen lock).
But I guess I had better do a search and maybe if necessary post a question
Thanks @malcolmlewis @hui for your input :+1:
